DESCRIPTION:September 10th – Christobel Kent\n\n\nWriting Setting: From Italy to Britain\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome bestselling author Christobel Kent as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, September 10 at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, with a presentation titled “Writing Setting: From Italy to Britain.” \n\n\nKent has had seventeen novels published: the first four being standalone thrillers set in Italy\, followed by the six novels in the Sandro Cellini Florentine detective series. Since then she has written seven psychological thrillers roughly in the ‘domestic noir’ genre\, including the Sunday Times bestseller The Loving Husband. She now lives in both Cambridge and Florence with her husband and five children. \n\n\nKent will speak about her personal trajectory as a writer\, and how she used a period living in Florence as her springboard to becoming an author.  Her first nine books were set in Italy\, principally Tuscany – her trademark being skillful immersion in Italian life.  The books did reasonably well but her big breakthrough came when she finally turned her attention to her own country\, something\, she says she’d been putting off\, for a mixture of superstition and prejudice that’s fairly common among writers. \n\n\nThe first of these homegrown works\, The Crooked House\, set in a part of the UK she grew up in\, received critical acclaim and her second English novel\, The Loving Husband became a Sunday Times bestseller and ended up selling 200\,000 copies across the media. DESCRIPTION:Crafting Short Stories\, With a Focus on Journal/Contest Submissions\, with Brent van Staalduinen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA short story is the epitome of literary economy. Less is more. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote\, “A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it.” No room for fluff or filler. Just pure narrative propulsion that packs a punch. Neil Gaiman has observed\, “A short story is the ultimate close-up magic trick – a couple of thousand words to take you around the universe or break your heart.” The recently released Hollywood film The Black Phone was adapted from a short story. So were many other cinematic classics. In light of today’s shrinking attention spans\, the short story is an especially compelling option to land a distracted reader’s attention. During our meeting on September 12\, Brent van Staalduinen will guide us through the process of crafting an unforgettable short story that will win a writing contest and/or be accepted by a journal. \nAbout: \nBrent is an award-winning novelist and short story writer from Ontario\, Canada\, and the author of the novels Boy\, Nothing But Life\, Saints\, and Unexpected\, as well as the short story collection Cut Road. His short stories have appeared in Hamilton Magazine\, The Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology\, The Prairie Journal\, The New Guard Literary Review\, The Nottingham Review\, and many other literary publications. He has been awarded the Kerry Schooley Book Award\, the Bristol Short Story Prize\, the Lush Triumphant Literary Award\, the Fiddlehead Best Short Story Award\, The Writer Magazine’s “Our Darkest Hour” Prize\, and several other honors. He is also a certified educator with more than a decade of teaching experience\, and has helped many other writers tell their stories. DESCRIPTION:How to Get Over Yourself and Write\n \nBarry Martin \n\nOn September 14\, we feature Barry Martin\, Managing Director of Lucky Penny Productions and “Wine Country Live” Producer and Co-Host on KVYN-FM. \nBarry Martin was born and raised in the Ozarks. He studied theatre in college\, then began working as an on-air radio talent at age 21. He came to California in 1986 and has been heard on Napa Valley airwaves for 21 of the last 35 years\, mostly as morning show host for either KVON-AM and KVYN-FM. He currently hosts Wine Country Live on 99.3 The Vine weekday mornings. He estimates he has presented around 20\,000 hours of live radio. \nAlong the way he also served as PIO for the Napa River Flood Control Project and Community Outreach Coordinator for the City of Napa. In 2009 in the midst of a massive recession\, he co-founded with Taylor Bartolucci the local theatre company Lucky Penny Productions which survived that recession and (so far) has survived the pandemic. \nHe began writing in earnest in 2010 and his short play “The First Thirty Minutes” was selected for a festival at Actor’s Theatre of Santa Cruz. In 2018 he finished a farce about the wine country called “The Tasting Room” and directed it for Lucky Penny\, then wrote the book for “A Napa Valley Christmas Carol” which debuted in 2021 with a second run coming up in December 2022. He is currently working on the script for a new Christmas show for kids and families called “Saving Santa.” \nBarry has two adult children who were raised in Napa and graduated from local public schools\, and is a grandpa four times over. \n  \n$5 Fee for members\, $7 for non-members. They waited over six months for a panel of judges to evaluate their work. As usual\, less than 50% of overall submissions were accepted. Every year\, the editors ask that we follow submission guidelines and hone our writing skills to generate more compelling stories. \nYou be the judge! Join us for an open critique of member submissions. \nDuring our September meeting\, we will share a few of these submissions. In addition\, the club will send you homework… Your assignment is to review\, score and rank the submissions based on the checklist the judges used. Please write a few critique notes. Then\, we will compare our thoughts to the actual results. As far as we know\, only one club member had their story published. Is it the one you would have chosen? Why\, or why not? Did you locate areas where the other submissions did not nail the criteria? \nWe think there are about five manuscripts. Even if you have the time to evaluate only one submission\, the exercise will help you grow as a storyteller\, editor\, and as a judge. Your participation will help everyone become better writers. You will discover why submissions\, rejection\, and re-submission are part of every writer’s life. \nThis critique session will be in-person September 24th\, at the Ovitt location\, also streamed via zoom. Speakers and topic are below.  \n \nSpeakers: Sara Roahen\nTopic: Writing the Tough Stuff: techniques and tips for those times when your own storytelling gets you down. \nSara Roahen writes\, edits\, coaches\, teaches\, and otherwise dabbles in storytelling—for fun and for hire. \nHer memoir\, Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table\, was the chosen reading for the One Book One New Orleans reading initiative in 2009\, and it received the Louisiana Library Association’s Louisiana Literary Award in 2010. Sara co-edited and contributed writing to The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook. Her work has additionally appeared in Saveur\, Bon Appetit\, Tin House\, Oxford American\, and Garden & Gun magazines\, and in/on a host of other magazines\, newspapers\, books\, and websites. \nSara honed her listening\, documenting\, backroad-driving\, and boudin-ball-eating skills while conducting extensive fieldwork for the Southern Foodways Alliance’s extraordinary oral history initiative. \nShe holds a copyediting certificate from UCSD and currently teaches life-story writing in San Luis Obispo\, California\, through Cuesta College’s Emeritus program. It has been adapted into a feature film for release later this year. Her short stories have been published in literary magazines across the country including The Gypsy Moon\, which was featured in Ms. Magazine. Many of her plays have been produced\, including Soundings which was a Los Angeles Times critics pick. \n\n\nBeverly was Artist-in-Residence”for UCLA Osher’s Lifelong Learning Institute. She teaches courses in Writing and Theatre at UCLA\, The University of Washington and at Cal State Channel Islands. She also directed the award-winning The Manor at Greystone Mansion\, which has been running for eighteen years. Beverly was honored as “Distinguished Instructor” by UCLA Extension to recognize her “exemplary teaching and excellence that foster learning and discovery among her students.” \n\n\nHer non-fiction publications have sold over four million copies worldwide. Her background also includes work as an Associate Director with the California State Universities and as an Academic Director in Oxford\, England. She has an undergraduate degree from UCLA and an MFA from Trinity University. She lives in Los Angeles and the Channel Islands with her husband Marc and her dog Mija. \n\n\nBeverly tell us that Short Fiction is a unique genre with its own pleasures and challenges. It was a home like no other place. Did it prepare me for the adventures I experienced later in life? Maybe not\, but it was the safe environment of my youth\, schools with smart teachers and smart kids\, and the place where I developed strong and lasting friendships. \n“My memoir\, ‘Lucky Thirteen\,’ relates my life in this place and my life after I left. Of most interest has been my career in the U.S. Marshals Service at a time when the first thirteen women were hired to carry the badge and credentials of a Deputy U.S. Marshal. I was assigned to Los Angeles\, Honolulu\, and Washington\, D.C. I then worked as a Special Agent for the Department of Defense until my retirement in 1993 in Las Vegas. Years later\, in 2017 with so many accomplishments already behind her as part of her advanced degree\, Iris took courses at Oxford University. \n“I married another deputy\, Larry Hattersley\,” she adds. “We juggled our jobs\, work-related separations\, children\, and home life. DESCRIPTION:October 10th 7PM : “Revision\, Transformation\, and Success\,” with Jennifer Givhan\nSep 28\, 2022 | Event\, Speaker\, Writing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHollywood has portrayed Mozart as a creative freak who dashed off perfect first drafts. This is a myth. His compositions underwent extensive revisions prior to performances. As Orison Swett Marden points out\, “Great writers have ever been known for their tenacity of purpose. Their works have not been flung off from minds aglow with genius\, but have been elaborated and elaborated into grace and beauty\, until every trace of their efforts has been obliterated.” \nWe must adopt the same patient\, persistent\, and workmanlike approach. In our meeting on October 10\, poet and novelist Jennifer Givhan will guide us through the nuts and bolts of how to revise\, rewrite\, and reimagine our work from the inside out. \nAbout: \n\nJennifer earned her Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Poetry from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina and her Master’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at California State University Fullerton\, where she was the recipient of the Graduate Equity Fellowship. Students with ID – free. \n\nPiecing together Yuba City\, Hollywood\, and Napa:\nCo-creating a Memoir\n \nNapa Valley Writers will feature actress Charlotte Stewart and writer Andy Demsky on Wednesday\, October 12 from 7-9 p.m. Charlotte Stewart\, a veteran actor of TV and film\, worked with writer Andy Demsky to write her memoir Little House in the Hollywood Hills\, published by Bear Manor Media in 2016. Stewart and Demsky will discuss their process for creating the book\, offering approaches that worked for them to write and publish a successful memoir. \nCharlotte Stewart is a celebrated film and television actor\, widely known as beloved schoolteacher Miss Beadle on Little House on the Prairie\, as well Mary X in David Lynch’s cult classic\, Eraserhead\, and as Betty Briggs in Lynch’s iconic TV series\, Twin Peaks. She has worked with leading men from Jimmy Stewart and Elvis Presley to Kevin Bacon and Kyle MacLachlan. Today she makes her home in Napa and throughout the year enjoys attending fan events. \nAndy Demsky is a writer who has co-written A Vineyard in Napa with Doug Shafer and Little House on in the Hollywood Hills with Charlotte Stewart. Most recently he wrote Unleash Your Inner Tudor\, a mock-self-help book written in the voice of Henry VIII\, based on Demsky’s popular Twitter account: @KngHnryVIII

We may not always have the editing skills we need when called upon in this capacity\, however. This session will help you develop fifteen skillsets which you can then apply to your work as well. \nA general introduction will cover adopting a mindset of neutrality\, how editing is a conversation\, and knowing how to respond based on what draft a writer is in\, followed by a set of specific tools such as working with genre conventions\, narrative arcs and plot holes\, scenic writing\, links and transitions\, tone of voice\, characters and relationships\, point-of-view\, and theme. \n\nStuart Horwitz is a ghostwriter\, independent editor\, and founder of Book Architecture (www.bookarchitecture.com).
