Each author will present and read from their book\, and address one question. His pursuits have included flying airplanes and helicopters\, SCUBA instructor\, ski patrol\, sailing\, and other adventures designed to pry him off his couch. His professional law enforcement career began in the 1970s\, when he served as patrol officer\, sergeant\, watch commander\, and patrol division commander. Jim’s tenure has always emphasized de-escalation techniques or calming the waters during potentially violent encounters. That career was followed by 22 years in security management and consulting\, including 5 years with UCLA’s Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center exploring crime prevention in schools and small retail establishments. Jim’s interests include writing in various forms\, including reports\, poetry\, songs\, short stories\, magazine articles\, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Ten years ago his writing interests shifted to novels. It can help you on your way to greater understanding of yourself and others who have played key roles in your life.  \nEvelyn’s first published book\, Between Inca Walls\, about falling in love while serving in the Peace Corps\, was awarded the 2021 Peace Corps Experience prize. It won a first place Hearten Award from Chanticleer Interna-tional Book Awards and a five-star rating by Readers Favorite. The meeting will begin at 10 am. The public is invited and welcome to attend at no charge. Fuerte is author of “Luis\, Take a Look at This! My Time with Huell Howser.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to amazon.com\, Huell Howser\, the exuberant\, hugely popular host of California’s Gold and other public-television shows\, was always exclaiming to the camera in his Southern drawl\, “Louie\, take a look at this!” Three years after Howser’s death in 2013\, Louie—aka Luis Fuerte\, a five-time Emmy-winning cameraman—shared the stories of their adventures exploring California\, making great television\, and showcasing Howser’s infectious love for the Golden State. \nDuring their twelve years together\, Howser and Fuerte developed not just a great working relationship\, but a true friendship. DESCRIPTION:Launch of Ekphrasis X                                                    July 17 Meeting\, 3:00 p.m. Zoom \nThis meeting is dedicated to Doug Fortier\, who is responsible for creating Ekphrasis for WMC. Hear and see Doug’s 2020 and 2021 Ekphrasis pieces. Doug’s writing group will share anecdotes and some of Doug’s work\, and WMC members can recall some of their own great Doug moments. \n 1946 – 2022 \nWe might not have a Writers’ Club if it weren’t for Doug Fortier. \nA year or so after the founding\, the club was floundering. Doug held it together with determination and his conviction that getting together once a month to share our craft made us all better writers and might get us published. He had an amazing ability to network. Every writer who moved to the Mendocino Coast and showed the slightest interest was met by Doug. Almost always they joined WMC. Each month he welcomed new faces\, until today in this tiny community\, the club has grown to 85 members. \nDoug loved learning and believed there was always more to learn about writing.  He wanted our WMC speakers to teach us something new. At Board Meetings\, evaluating the past month’s program\, his greatest criticism was: “Not enough craft.” \nWe are one chapter of a state-wide organization\, the California Writers’ Club. Until he got too ill to travel\, Doug journeyed faithfully to the Bay Area to attend these meetings. Mercifully\, he kept the political shenanigans of what went on to himself. “How was it?” we would ask. “Nothing much to report\,” he’d say. \nHe was WMC’s social media guru\, posting news on our website\, keeping up with member publications\, and programs to come.  He designed the cover of every year’s anthology and\, with Amie McGee’s help\, put out a beautiful volume.  For Ekphrasis\, he photographed every artist’s work and put together a wonderful slide show to accompany our readings. \nHe was our person; we were his tribe. We will all miss him terribly.

On August 8th\, Ross Browne will guide us through the crafting of the structure and identity of a series. \nSeries that inspire intense loyalty from readers\, the kind that truly moves the meter with book sales\, usually have more to offer their reading audiences than the same protagonist(s) from book to book. Ross’s Series and Series Identity presentation will explore the advantages of writing in series and look at what can be learned from successful series authors such as John Sandford\, Stieg Larsson\, Tana French\, Nelson DeMille\, CJ Box\, and Lee Child. Students with ID – free. \n\nThe Fourth Column\n \n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Kevin Fisher-Paulson\, a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nEvery writer has one column in him.  The trick is to be the kind of writer who has one column in him every week. \nKevin will talk about the craft of writing from the perspective of purpose and structure.  Specifically\, Kevin will talk about the process of writing a weekly column for a major newspaper. The writer must learn how to open his soul without telling every secret\, and how to establish a rhythm and a voice.  The writer must learn to tell the truth\, but let the world act as a fact checker. \nKevin grapples with great issues but knows that the narrative must be satisfied in a 750-word count.  As the reputation of the column grows\, he must be aware of consistency\, fresh perspective\, and the assertive reader. \nThe writing process begins with a commitment to the creative self. As Kevin will explain\, everyone has an autobiography but not everyone has a memoir. \nKevin Fisher-Paulson earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Something Useless from the University of Michigan.  He has completed post-graduate coursework at the University of Iowa\, the University of Oregon\, Rutgers University\, and the New School. \nKevin is a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nIn addition to the weekly column\, he has published two books\, A Song for Lost Angels and How We Keep Spinning.  Song was nominated\, and a finalist for both the Benjamin Franklin Award as well as the Independent Book Publishers award.
