Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings forever transformed public perception. For the first time\, fantasy could be considered serious literature\, its masterworks on par with the classics of any other genre. In recent decades\, fantasy has surged in popularity\, providing ample blockbuster material for Hollywood. But what specifically makes fantasy stand out? And how can you incorporate its many treasures into your own writing\, regardless of your chosen genre? \nIn our meeting on March 14\, Eric Witchey will walk us through the magic of the fantastic. \nEric Witchey has sold over 100 short stories and several novels. His short fiction has appeared in numerous print and online anthologies and magazines\, such as Polyphony\, The Best New Writing 2012\, Low Port\, Short Story America\, Realms of Fantasy\, Space Squid\, Fortean Bureau\, Thug Lit\, ClarkesWorld\, Jim Baen’s Universe\, and Writers of the Future. Before starting to write fiction at age 74\, he published over 100 professional and academic articles.\nThere are many obstacles to becoming a mystery writer at age 74. Ron’s “strategy” was to ignore them. The result so far has been 12 stories about a baby boomer detective couple—the sleuthing silvers—at the website www.thesleuthingsilvers.com. They have over 3400 followers on Facebook and have attracted the interest of two young screenwriters\, who are writing a pilot to be submitted to streaming services. Ron has been interviewed on NBC radio\, has been featured in the local press and has been a judge for the Shamus Award—given by the Private Eye Writers of America—for the best short story. Pacific Book Review’s Alyssa Avina had this to say\, “In author Viviana Hall’s Poems of Love\, the poet translates the language of love through a bilingual poetry book. A native of Argentina\, the writer translates her poetry from Spanish into English\, conveying love in the form of compassion\, a joy for the love that life brings us\, and the transformative nature of love as a whole.” \nViviana Hall is an American writer\, journalist\, and clinical social worker. Her first book “Miedos” was published in her native Buenos Aires in 1977. DESCRIPTION:Lynne Thompson: Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles \nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is honored to welcome Lynne Thompson\, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles\, as our guest speaker on April 2\, 2022 at 1:00\, via Zoom\, to help us celebrate National Poetry Month. \nAs a native Angeleno and daughter of Caribbean immigrants\, Thompson says that she is proud to serve as L.A. Poet Laureate and as a literary ambassador for literature in general and for poetry in particular.  While some question the importance of poetry in our lives\, she responds that when humanity experiences difficult or joyous times—births\, deaths\, weddings\, wars—they turn to the poets who wrap language around what they are feeling.  Her own poetry addresses ancestry and family\, as well as the events of our days. It is those poems that she is happy to share with us in celebration of National Poetry month. \nThompson was appointed Los Angeles’ Poet Laureate in 2021.  Her most recent collection of poems\, Fretwork\, was selected the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize winner and was published in 2019. A multiple Pushcart Prize nominee\, Thompson is the author of Beg No Pardon (Perugia Press)\, winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award\, and Start With A Small Guitar (What Books Press). \nHer work has been widely published and anthologized including in New England Review\, Ploughshares\, Massachusetts Review\, Colorado Review\, Pleiades\, and Best American Poetry 2020\, among others. Young adult. These rank among the most lucrative genres in today’s competitive market. But although they are easier to read\, they’re not necessarily easier to write. Crafting a compelling and instructive narrative that younger readers will eagerly follow is more challenging than it seems. If it’s too simple\, they’ll grow bored. If it’s too unwieldy\, they’ll give up in frustration. Strike the right balance\, however\, and you’ll strike gold. In our meeting on April 11\, two-time Emmy winner Sindy McKay-Swerdlove will guide us through the art of edutainment. \nFor the past forty years\, Sindy has built a world-class career around an area known as edutainment. This mixture of education and entertainment is ubiquitous in the world of children’s television\, particularly in animation. It is also found in most books written for children and in many electronic games. There is an art to disguising education within entertainment\, be it cognitive skills\, social skills\, or even fine motor skills. Sindy will shed light on this coveted art\, which she has thoroughly mastered. \nSindy is a two-time Emmy and three-time Humanitas award-winning animation writer specializing in edutainment and preschool projects. She began her writing career on the popular CBS television series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies\, for which she won an Emmy. She has since written and worked in development for nearly every major animation studio including Disney Studios\, Warner Bros.\, Universal\, Film Roman\, Sony\, Columbia/Tri-Star\, MGM\, and Apple TV. \nSindy developed and story-edited the PBS series Clifford The Big Red Dog\, nominated for an Emmy Award for two years running and winner of a Humanitas Prize for writing in 2001. She also developed the internationally successful series Jakers!
