Before starting to write fiction at age 74\, he published over 100 professional and academic articles.\nThere are many obstacles to becoming a mystery writer at age 74. Ron’s “strategy” was to ignore them. The result so far has been 12 stories about a baby boomer detective couple—the sleuthing silvers—at the website www.thesleuthingsilvers.com. They have over 3400 followers on Facebook and have attracted the interest of two young screenwriters\, who are writing a pilot to be submitted to streaming services. Ron has been interviewed on NBC radio\, has been featured in the local press and has been a judge for the Shamus Award—given by the Private Eye Writers of America—for the best short story. In recent decades\, fantasy has surged in popularity\, providing ample blockbuster material for Hollywood. But what specifically makes fantasy stand out? And how can you incorporate its many treasures into your own writing\, regardless of your chosen genre? \nIn our meeting on March 14\, Eric Witchey will walk us through the magic of the fantastic. \nEric Witchey has sold over 100 short stories and several novels. DESCRIPTION:Writing the Truth\n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Gil Gross\, an award-winning radio journalist who has reported the news to millions of Americans and interviewed pop culture icons and heads-of-state alike. \nWhen you write nonfiction\, whether it is political or just what the posies in the backyard look like\, you have to tell a story.  It’s like once upon a time\, except that everything has to be true.  I’ll look at how you do that\, what the responsibility is to your readers or listeners\, and how it can all go wrong\, even with the best intentions\, and why it so often does. \nGil has been Special Correspondent and Chief Anchor for ABC News Radio\, as well as a correspondent and anchor for CBS and NBC News.  As a newsman and humorist\, he has also combined his talents as Paul Harvey’s chief substitute at ABC and as the main substitute for Charles Osgood at CBS. \nA journalist for more than four decades\, Gil became the youngest anchorman in ABC News history at age 23. He went on to win a string of investigative and journalism awards for international reporting covering major events of our time from 9/11 to space launches to wars in the Middle East\, including the War in Iraq. His coverage of Hurricane Katrina won him the national Edward R. Murrow award\, though his most cherished awards have been for investigative reporting on the plight of mistreated children.  He has been nominated again this year by CBS News. \nHe has often combined network and local news duties out of a belief that state government usually has the most significant impact on the lives of listeners\, bringing together members of both parties to the point that when he left WABC in the 80’s for the network\, both Governor Cuomo of New York and Tom Kean of New Jersey showed up unexpectedly to be with him for the last hour of the show. \nHe has worked at iconic radio stations such as KGO\, WABC\, WCBS\, WOR\, WLS\, and WNBC and hosted his own national program for a number of years on CBS Radio.  Among the things he is proudest of accomplishing was raising millions of dollars for homeless charities including St. Anthony’s in San Francisco\, and being on the board for years of Community Access\, a charity serving the mentally ill homeless in New York City. \nGil now does specials for CBS News Radio\, produces podcasts for District Productive\, and has been acting\, especially in Shakespeare. She taught Physical Education in Aylesbury\, England\, then worked as an Activities Director in Fargo\, ND for individuals with special needs. Later\, she was a Physical Education teacher and Dean of Students at Madison West High School\, and then was Waupaca Middle School Principal from 2017-2021. \nShe concurrently served in the Army National Guard from March 2001-2009 as a Military Police Officer. Laura deployed to Baghdad\, Iraq from March 2003 to July 2004. \nShe is now a leadership consultant and professional speaker with Strategic Leaders Academy. Masks requested. \nShe’ll discuss her challenges as a writer as she balanced hard facts vs. the feelings of loved ones following 12 years dealing with personal relationships\, family dynamics\, the health care system\, and financial issues as her mother suffered each agonizing step of Alzheimer’s disease\, the sixth most common cause of death in the United States. \nEmploying a creative blend of narrative\, dialogue\, and letters\, and under the pen name J. Margotta-Ferrara\, she brought out “The Woman in Room 23” eight years after her mother’s passing\, weaving together frank details and the central character’s remembrances of key events of her life. Although presented as a work of fiction\, it stems from real-life situations and leaves readers profoundly moved. \nAn extremely active member of the CWC’s High Desert Branch\, Jenny started spinning imaginative yarns as soon as she could talk\, and she began writing as soon as she could pick up a pencil. Her subsequent efforts led to technical articles\, opinion pieces\, short stories\, two young-adult fantasy/adventure novels\, “Retribution” and “Resolution” that she co-authored\, and the cookbook “Some Like It Hot…the Culinary Adventures of One Hot Momma and One Cool Dude” that she co-authored with her husband. Her presentation will include many aspects of book cover design including: Purpose of a Book Cover\, Importance of a Book Cover\, Book Covers for E-Book\, Paperback\, Hardback\, And Audio\, Genre Expectations and Differences\, Process\, and more. \nSheri McGathy has worked in prepress in a graphic design department as a Graphic Arts Coordinator/Copy Editor for just under 45 years. Now\, her plan is to write and craft book covers. She is hoping to see the cover design business grow now that she has more time. \nSheri’s favorite part of creating covers\, especially pre-mades\, is that it gives her a chance to tell a story with the images and on pre-mades\, try out new techniques or ideas. Her hope is to craft something that hints at what lies beyond those cover flaps. \nSheri was born a buckeye\, but was uprooted in 1971 and replanted amongst Kansas sunflowers\, tornadoes\, and college football. It’s a good life. Shari is married with one son\, who is now an adult with three children\, of which she considers the lights of her life.
