DESCRIPTION:How to Get Over Yourself and Write\n \nBarry Martin \n\nOn September 14\, we feature Barry Martin\, Managing Director of Lucky Penny Productions and “Wine Country Live” Producer and Co-Host on KVYN-FM. \nBarry Martin was born and raised in the Ozarks. He studied theatre in college\, then began working as an on-air radio talent at age 21. He came to California in 1986 and has been heard on Napa Valley airwaves for 21 of the last 35 years\, mostly as morning show host for either KVON-AM and KVYN-FM. He currently hosts Wine Country Live on 99.3 The Vine weekday mornings. He estimates he has presented around 20\,000 hours of live radio. \nAlong the way he also served as PIO for the Napa River Flood Control Project and Community Outreach Coordinator for the City of Napa. In 2009 in the midst of a massive recession\, he co-founded with Taylor Bartolucci the local theatre company Lucky Penny Productions which survived that recession and (so far) has survived the pandemic. \nHe began writing in earnest in 2010 and his short play “The First Thirty Minutes” was selected for a festival at Actor’s Theatre of Santa Cruz. In 2018 he finished a farce about the wine country called “The Tasting Room” and directed it for Lucky Penny\, then wrote the book for “A Napa Valley Christmas Carol” which debuted in 2021 with a second run coming up in December 2022. He is currently working on the script for a new Christmas show for kids and families called “Saving Santa.” \nBarry has two adult children who were raised in Napa and graduated from local public schools\, and is a grandpa four times over. \n  \n$5 Fee for members\, $7 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Crafting Short Stories\, With a Focus on Journal/Contest Submissions\, with Brent van Staalduinen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA short story is the epitome of literary economy. Less is more. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote\, “A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it.” No room for fluff or filler. Just pure narrative propulsion that packs a punch. Neil Gaiman has observed\, “A short story is the ultimate close-up magic trick – a couple of thousand words to take you around the universe or break your heart.” The recently released Hollywood film The Black Phone was adapted from a short story. So were many other cinematic classics. In light of today’s shrinking attention spans\, the short story is an especially compelling option to land a distracted reader’s attention. During our meeting on September 12\, Brent van Staalduinen will guide us through the process of crafting an unforgettable short story that will win a writing contest and/or be accepted by a journal. \nAbout: \nBrent is an award-winning novelist and short story writer from Ontario\, Canada\, and the author of the novels Boy\, Nothing But Life\, Saints\, and Unexpected\, as well as the short story collection Cut Road. His short stories have appeared in Hamilton Magazine\, The Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology\, The Prairie Journal\, The New Guard Literary Review\, The Nottingham Review\, and many other literary publications. DESCRIPTION:September 10th – Christobel Kent\n\n\nWriting Setting: From Italy to Britain\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome bestselling author Christobel Kent as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, September 10 at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, with a presentation titled “Writing Setting: From Italy to Britain.” \n\n\nKent has had seventeen novels published: the first four being standalone thrillers set in Italy\, followed by the six novels in the Sandro Cellini Florentine detective series. Since then she has written seven psychological thrillers roughly in the ‘domestic noir’ genre\, including the Sunday Times bestseller The Loving Husband. She now lives in both Cambridge and Florence with her husband and five children. \n\n\nKent will speak about her personal trajectory as a writer\, and how she used a period living in Florence as her springboard to becoming an author.  Her first nine books were set in Italy\, principally Tuscany – her trademark being skillful immersion in Italian life.  The books did reasonably well but her big breakthrough came when she finally turned her attention to her own country\, something\, she says she’d been putting off\, for a mixture of superstition and prejudice that’s fairly common among writers. \n\n\nThe first of these homegrown works\, The Crooked House\, set in a part of the UK she grew up in\, received critical acclaim and her second English novel\, The Loving Husband became a Sunday Times bestseller and ended up selling 200\,000 copies across the media. Mask requested. \nBarroga explains that “An early beta reader asked ‘Was this memoir all true?’ I said ‘Turn Right at The Water Buffalo’ was not a memoir; it’s a trip with ‘fictionalized facts.’ \nMy notes were thirty years old; the trip\, five years older. Listeners said my verbal details seemed fresher than my written descriptions. As in pitching plays\, a practice nurtured for 40-plus years writing them\, I creatively layer fiction among facts. Review what elicits audience responses\, on screen and onstage: ‘truths”— like the contrasting crunchy and chewy textures of a bagel—should already engage readers. Integrate carefully selected fiction—like ‘fresh lox or unspreadable cream cheese.’ \n“Internally I argued whether any writer needs to tag what is fictitious or not; I say\, no. With seams undetectable between fact and fiction\, a writer needs to tell a gripping\, relatable\, infuriating story\, to cross a line\, to tease\, cap\, and package. The meeting begins at 10 am. The public is welcome and invited to attend free of charge. \nThe HDCWC\, composed of local writers\, will honor the genre of writing lyrics by reading and sometimes singing favorite songs. Members are invited to play an instrument or just talk about music and its impact on their lives. It will be an Open Mic for music. \nMembers and guests wanting to sign up to participate may request a 5 minute spot by emailing HDCWC@aol.com.\nThe California Writers Club is a century-old nonprofit that is the largest professional organization of writers west of the Mississippi. DESCRIPTION:Napa Valley Writers meets  second Wednesday of the month\n7 – 9 p.m.\n$5 Fee for members\, $7 for non-members. Students with ID – free. \n\nThe Fourth Column\n \n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Kevin Fisher-Paulson\, a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nEvery writer has one column in him.  The trick is to be the kind of writer who has one column in him every week. \nKevin will talk about the craft of writing from the perspective of purpose and structure.  Specifically\, Kevin will talk about the process of writing a weekly column for a major newspaper. The writer must learn how to open his soul without telling every secret\, and how to establish a rhythm and a voice.  The writer must learn to tell the truth\, but let the world act as a fact checker. \nKevin grapples with great issues but knows that the narrative must be satisfied in a 750-word count.  As the reputation of the column grows\, he must be aware of consistency\, fresh perspective\, and the assertive reader. \nThe writing process begins with a commitment to the creative self. As Kevin will explain\, everyone has an autobiography but not everyone has a memoir. \nKevin Fisher-Paulson earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Something Useless from the University of Michigan.  He has completed post-graduate coursework at the University of Iowa\, the University of Oregon\, Rutgers University\, and the New School. \nKevin is a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nIn addition to the weekly column\, he has published two books\, A Song for Lost Angels and How We Keep Spinning.  Song was nominated\, and a finalist for both the Benjamin Franklin Award as well as the Independent Book Publishers award. This is no surprise to anyone who enjoys settling down with a new book in a series they know and love. It’s an easy purchase decision that publishers know they can rely on time and again. On August 8th\, Ross Browne will guide us through the crafting of the structure and identity of a series. \nSeries that inspire intense loyalty from readers\, the kind that truly moves the meter with book sales\, usually have more to offer their reading audiences than the same protagonist(s) from book to book. Ross’s Series and Series Identity presentation will explore the advantages of writing in series and look at what can be learned from successful series authors such as John Sandford\, Stieg Larsson\, Tana French\, Nelson DeMille\, CJ Box\, and Lee Child. Speaker and topic are below. \n \nSpeaker: Andrew Luria\nTopic: For the Love of the Game: A 14-Year Journey from Idea to Debut Novel \nAndrew Luria is a ten-time Emmy Award winner and has more than twenty years of experience as a news\, sports\, technology\, and entertainment anchor and reporter.  He is currently with FOX 5 San Diego.  Andrew played baseball and football at Cornell University and semi-pro baseball for the Santa Barbara Foresters as well.  Andrew coaches his three kids in baseball\, basketball\, and football.  He also teaches an award-winning elementary school broadcasting class.  He recently published his first book:  a historical fiction time-traveling sports story for kids\, called The Adventures of Charlie Marley. \nAndrew will be in person speaking on the long road it took to go from the beginning of the book project to the final product\, and the current effort to follow it up with another (in less time\, hopefully!).  He will address how balancing life and career and navigating the book world has been quite the journey\, and he is looking forward to sharing his experiences with everyone. \nOur in-person monthly meetings are admission free and held at the:\nNipomo Library\, Community Room\, 918 West Tefft Street\, Nipomo\, CA\nDirections: From 101 northbound or southbound\, take the Tefft street exit.\nProceed west for .9 mile.
