Syntax and lineation\, understatement\, and the perils of abstraction and cliche will also be discussed. \nMichelle Peñaloza is the author of Former Possessions of the Spanish Empire\, winner of the 2018 Hillary Gravendyk National Poetry Prize (Inlandia Books\, 2019). She is also the author of two chapbooks\, landscape/heartbreak (Two Sylvias\, 2015)\, and Last Night I Dreamt of Volcanoes (Organic Weapon Arts\, 2015). The recipient of fellowships and awards from the University of Oregon and Kundiman\, Michelle has also received support from The Palm Beach Poetry Festival\, Lemon Tree House\, Key West Literary Seminar\, Caldera\, 4Culture\, Literary Arts\, VONA/Voices\, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, among others. Coyote is a politically engaged individual who champions a multitude of causes. He is also a Zen Buddhist priest as well as a songwriter\, guitarist\, and singer. Young adult. These rank among the most lucrative genres in today’s competitive market. But although they are easier to read\, they’re not necessarily easier to write. Crafting a compelling and instructive narrative that younger readers will eagerly follow is more challenging than it seems. If it’s too simple\, they’ll grow bored. If it’s too unwieldy\, they’ll give up in frustration. Strike the right balance\, however\, and you’ll strike gold. In our meeting on April 11\, two-time Emmy winner Sindy McKay-Swerdlove will guide us through the art of edutainment. \nFor the past forty years\, Sindy has built a world-class career around an area known as edutainment. This mixture of education and entertainment is ubiquitous in the world of children’s television\, particularly in animation. It is also found in most books written for children and in many electronic games. There is an art to disguising education within entertainment\, be it cognitive skills\, social skills\, or even fine motor skills. Sindy will shed light on this coveted art\, which she has thoroughly mastered. \nSindy is a two-time Emmy and three-time Humanitas award-winning animation writer specializing in edutainment and preschool projects. She began her writing career on the popular CBS television series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies\, for which she won an Emmy. She has since written and worked in development for nearly every major animation studio including Disney Studios\, Warner Bros.\, Universal\, Film Roman\, Sony\, Columbia/Tri-Star\, MGM\, and Apple TV. \nSindy developed and story-edited the PBS series Clifford The Big Red Dog\, nominated for an Emmy Award for two years running and winner of a Humanitas Prize for writing in 2001. She also developed the internationally successful series Jakers! DESCRIPTION:Lynne Thompson: Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles \nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is honored to welcome Lynne Thompson\, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles\, as our guest speaker on April 2\, 2022 at 1:00\, via Zoom\, to help us celebrate National Poetry Month. \nAs a native Angeleno and daughter of Caribbean immigrants\, Thompson says that she is proud to serve as L.A. Poet Laureate and as a literary ambassador for literature in general and for poetry in particular.  While some question the importance of poetry in our lives\, she responds that when humanity experiences difficult or joyous times—births\, deaths\, weddings\, wars—they turn to the poets who wrap language around what they are feeling.  Her own poetry addresses ancestry and family\, as well as the events of our days. It is those poems that she is happy to share with us in celebration of National Poetry month. \nThompson was appointed Los Angeles’ Poet Laureate in 2021.  Her most recent collection of poems\, Fretwork\, was selected the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize winner and was published in 2019. Speaker and topic are below. \n\nSpeaker: Viviana Hall\nTopic: Poems of Love \nApril is National Poetry Month\, reminding us that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters in our lives. \nOur speaker will be our very own Viviana Hall\, who will do her presentation and a poetry reading from her recently published book\, Poems of Love\, which has received acclaim. Pacific Book Review’s Alyssa Avina had this to say\, “In author Viviana Hall’s Poems of Love\, the poet translates the language of love through a bilingual poetry book. A native of Argentina\, the writer translates her poetry from Spanish into English\, conveying love in the form of compassion\, a joy for the love that life brings us\, and the transformative nature of love as a whole.” \nViviana Hall is an American writer\, journalist\, and clinical social worker. Her first book “Miedos” was published in her native Buenos Aires in 1977. Thereafter\, she came to New York as a press correspondent\, wherein 1982 a new edition of “Miedos” and her second book “Poemas del Cielo y la Tierra” were published. \nAs a journalist\, she produced\, wrote\, and hosted various television documentaries\, variety\, and public service programs in New York. Her media work earned her numerous distinguished awards.
