SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): Read the Book\, Meet the Author
DESCRIPTION:Ridge Writers has announced the next “Read the Book\, Meet the Author” event\, David George on Thursday\, April 7\, 1:30 p.m. at Mac’s International Restaurant. Masks requested except while eating and drinking. \nRed Rock Books has the book in stock. Participants buy the book and read it in advance of the get-together. Sign up at Red Rock Books. The ticket price of $32 includes tea at Mac’s with tea sandwiches\, cheesecake\, beverage\, a copy of the book that the author will autograph\, entry in a gift basket drawing\, and convivial discussion with David George. \nHis debut book\, “Granddad’s Garden: Stories of the Natural World\,” fits into the current “climate lit” genre. Each chapter of “Granddad’s Garden” stands alone as a complete story\, intended for parents and grandparents to enjoy reading to their children and grandchildren. The stories relate adventures that Granddad and his grandson experience while exploring nature together. Jeremy starts as a three-year-old and grows with each new chapter until the age of nine\, showing his magical transformation into a mature child. Jeremy becomes more aware of the natural world around him as he grows\, and Granddad reveals nature’s most important lessons through modern-day fables. With “Granddad’s Garden\,” the author has created a feel-good book for troubling times. \nHe will also give the Ridge Writers program on Thursday evening at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 6:30 p.m.\, no admission charge. This will not be the same as the afternoon’s presentation.

SUMMARY:San Fernando (Zoom): Celebrate Poetry Month
DESCRIPTION:Lynne Thompson: Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles \nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is honored to welcome Lynne Thompson\, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles\, as our guest speaker on April 2\, 2022 at 1:00\, via Zoom\, to help us celebrate National Poetry Month. \nAs a native Angeleno and daughter of Caribbean immigrants\, Thompson says that she is proud to serve as L.A. Poet Laureate and as a literary ambassador for literature in general and for poetry in particular.  While some question the importance of poetry in our lives\, she responds that when humanity experiences difficult or joyous times—births\, deaths\, weddings\, wars—they turn to the poets who wrap language around what they are feeling.  Her own poetry addresses ancestry and family\, as well as the events of our days. It is those poems that she is happy to share with us in celebration of National Poetry month. \nThompson was appointed Los Angeles’ Poet Laureate in 2021.  Her most recent collection of poems\, Fretwork\, was selected the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize winner and was published in 2019. A multiple Pushcart Prize nominee\, Thompson is the author of Beg No Pardon (Perugia Press)\, winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award\, and Start With A Small Guitar (What Books Press). \nHer work has been widely published and anthologized including in New England Review\, Ploughshares\, Massachusetts Review\, Colorado Review\, Pleiades\, and Best American Poetry 2020\, among others. Thompson serves on the Boards of Directors of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books and is Chair of the Board of Trustees at her alma mater\, Scripps College. \nFor additional information\, please visit https://www.lynnethompson.us \n. . . . . \nNote:  CWC-SFV members will automatically receive an invitation to this presentation. CWC members from other branches should contact SVF VP/Zoom host Monte Swann by noon on March 1 to request a free invitation.  Other guests may purchase admission to this presentation at http://www.cwc-sfv.org by noon on April 1.  After purchasing admission\, they will receive a Zoom invitation.  We regret that we cannot accommodate late requests. \n

SUMMARY:Tri-Valley (Hybrid): What a Fabulous Edit Can Do for Your Writing & Publishing

Mary will be doing live edits on selected TVW members’ works. \nThis meeting will be a hybrid meeting. Registrants have the choice to meet in person at the Four Points by Sheraton or online. Mary will be joining us via Zoom. \nWhether we are aiming for traditional or self-publication\, we all make our writing more beautiful\, powerful\, and lasting with the help of a superb editor. The world is full of editors and writing coaches. And that’s a good thing. We have many choices\, as writers. We can hire an editor at any stage of our project\, and if he or she is exquisite\, we will richly benefit. The reason this is true is that by far the most important quality in an editor is deep listening. Everything else follows from that talent. The best way to improve the art of writing is by finding the deep listener editor. \nMary says\, “I do Developmental\, Copy\, and Proof editing all at the same time. This is highly unusual\, I realize. But I do this because it’s how I think. It is how I read. And it is how I write. It comes naturally to me to respond on all three levels at once.” \nJoin us on Saturday\, March 19\, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. \nREGISTRATION DETAILS: \nThere is a two-step RSVP & Payment process: \n\nAn Email RSVP is REQUIRED at reservations@trivalleywriters.org by Friday\, March 18. Before starting to write fiction at age 74\, he published over 100 professional and academic articles.\nThere are many obstacles to becoming a mystery writer at age 74. Ron’s “strategy” was to ignore them. The result so far has been 12 stories about a baby boomer detective couple—the sleuthing silvers—at the website www.thesleuthingsilvers.com. They have over 3400 followers on Facebook and have attracted the interest of two young screenwriters\, who are writing a pilot to be submitted to streaming services. Ron has been interviewed on NBC radio\, has been featured in the local press and has been a judge for the Shamus Award—given by the Private Eye Writers of America—for the best short story. SUMMARY:Napa (Zoom): Writing the Truth
DESCRIPTION:Writing the Truth\n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Gil Gross\, an award-winning radio journalist who has reported the news to millions of Americans and interviewed pop culture icons and heads-of-state alike. \nWhen you write nonfiction\, whether it is political or just what the posies in the backyard look like\, you have to tell a story.  It’s like once upon a time\, except that everything has to be true.  I’ll look at how you do that\, what the responsibility is to your readers or listeners\, and how it can all go wrong\, even with the best intentions\, and why it so often does. \nGil has been Special Correspondent and Chief Anchor for ABC News Radio\, as well as a correspondent and anchor for CBS and NBC News.  As a newsman and humorist\, he has also combined his talents as Paul Harvey’s chief substitute at ABC and as the main substitute for Charles Osgood at CBS. \nA journalist for more than four decades\, Gil became the youngest anchorman in ABC News history at age 23. He went on to win a string of investigative and journalism awards for international reporting covering major events of our time from 9/11 to space launches to wars in the Middle East\, including the War in Iraq. His coverage of Hurricane Katrina won him the national Edward R. Murrow award\, though his most cherished awards have been for investigative reporting on the plight of mistreated children.  He has been nominated again this year by CBS News. \nHe has often combined network and local news duties out of a belief that state government usually has the most significant impact on the lives of listeners\, bringing together members of both parties to the point that when he left WABC in the 80’s for the network\, both Governor Cuomo of New York and Tom Kean of New Jersey showed up unexpectedly to be with him for the last hour of the show. \nHe has worked at iconic radio stations such as KGO\, WABC\, WCBS\, WOR\, WLS\, and WNBC and hosted his own national program for a number of years on CBS Radio.  Among the things he is proudest of accomplishing was raising millions of dollars for homeless charities including St. Anthony’s in San Francisco\, and being on the board for years of Community Access\, a charity serving the mentally ill homeless in New York City. \nGil now does specials for CBS News Radio\, produces podcasts for District Productive\, and has been acting\, especially in Shakespeare. He will do Polonius in a production of Hamlet in May of 2022. \nGil lives with his wife\, actress-singer-broadcaster Rhoda Bodzin in Santa Fe\, New Mexico.  Their son is +just received his Master’s Degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington\, D.C. \nRegistration Info:\nNominal $5 Fee (+small PayPal charge) for Virtual Meeting. Please Register/Pay with the Zoom link below: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3trJxla0QRqOijlzcRYGMQ \n After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Sometimes the PayPal wheel will spin for a while\, but it should go through in a minute or less. If it doesn’t\, we recommend you try another browser or you can contact Sarita Lopez before the day of the event at lopezs10@live.com and she will find a way to get you the registration link.  \n*This meeting may be recorded (audio/video) and photographed for the general usage of Napa Valley Writers\, including but not limited to purposes of publicity\, social media\, and archives.  By entering into the meeting or logging in\, you hereby submit your acknowledgment and consent to Napa Valley Writers and the California Writers Club.  These recordings and photographs may not be used or shared for personal use without permission of the board of Napa Valley Writers or its parent organization\, California Writers Club.

DESCRIPTION:JENNY MARGOTTA INTRODUCES THE WOMAN IN ROOM 23 ON MARCH 3 \nAuthor and editor Jenny Margotta will give Ridge Writer’s March 3 program\, “The Woman in Room 23\,” at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Admission free. Masks requested. \nShe’ll discuss her challenges as a writer as she balanced hard facts vs. the feelings of loved ones following 12 years dealing with personal relationships\, family dynamics\, the health care system\, and financial issues as her mother suffered each agonizing step of Alzheimer’s disease\, the sixth most common cause of death in the United States. \nEmploying a creative blend of narrative\, dialogue\, and letters\, and under the pen name J. Although presented as a work of fiction\, it stems from real-life situations and leaves readers profoundly moved. \nAn extremely active member of the CWC’s High Desert Branch\, Jenny started spinning imaginative yarns as soon as she could talk\, and she began writing as soon as she could pick up a pencil. Her subsequent efforts led to technical articles\, opinion pieces\, short stories\, two young-adult fantasy/adventure novels\, “Retribution” and “Resolution” that she co-authored\, and the cookbook “Some Like It Hot…the Culinary Adventures of One Hot Momma and One Cool Dude” that she co-authored with her husband. Additionally\, she has edited nearly 150 full-lengths books and has designed over 50 book covers\, \nShe’ll conclude the evening with a book signing. \nNote that Jenny will also discuss “The Woman in Room 23” for Read the Book Meet the Author\, 1:30 p.m. at Mac’s International Restaurant.
