SUMMARY:Inland Empire (Hybrid): Book Cover Design
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 26\, 2022\nSheri L. McGathy: Book Cover Design\nJoin us as Sheri McGathy speaks on the importance of book cover design. Her presentation will include many aspects of book cover design including: Purpose of a Book Cover\, Importance of a Book Cover\, Book Covers for E-Book\, Paperback\, Hardback\, And Audio\, Genre Expectations and Differences\, Process\, and more. \nSheri McGathy has worked in prepress in a graphic design department as a Graphic Arts Coordinator/Copy Editor for just under 45 years. Now\, her plan is to write and craft book covers. She is hoping to see the cover design business grow now that she has more time. \nSheri’s favorite part of creating covers\, especially pre-mades\, is that it gives her a chance to tell a story with the images and on pre-mades\, try out new techniques or ideas. Her hope is to craft something that hints at what lies beyond those cover flaps. \nSheri was born a buckeye\, but was uprooted in 1971 and replanted amongst Kansas sunflowers\, tornadoes\, and college football. It’s a good life. Shari is married with one son\, who is now an adult with three children\, of which she considers the lights of her life. She lives with her husband\, two dogs\, and a cat\, which are also lights in her life. \nSheri’s website may be visited here: https://coverdesign.sherimcgathy.com/\nConnect with her of Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/coverartbysheri/\nContact Sheri via her Contact page here: https://coverdesign.sherimcgathy.com/contact-sheri/ \nThis meeting will be held via Zoom and in the Arlington Branch of the Riverside Public Library in Riverside\, California\, at 11:00 am – until 1:00 pm.\n9556 Magnolia Avenue\, Riverside\, CA 92503

SUMMARY:Berkeley (Zoom): How to Land the Agent of your Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Agent 101: How to Land the Agent of your Dreams with Amy Collins [Feb. 20th]\n\n\n\nWhy do some authors get an agent and others do not? When I give lectures to beginning writers\, I find that they have very little idea of how they can go from slaving away on their keyboards at night and on weekends to actually quitting their day job.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. Levine “wears two hats”–he is a lawyer and a literary agent.\nMr. Levine has practiced entertainment law for almost 40 years\, specializing in the representation of writers\, producers\, actors\, directors\, composers\, musicians\, artists\, authors\, photographers\, galleries\, publishers\, developers\, production companies\, and theatre companies in the fields of motion pictures\, television\, interactive multimedia\, live stage\, recorded music\, concerts\, the visual arts\, publishing\, and advertising. In 1996\, Mr. Levine opened the Paul S. Levine Literary Agency\, specializing in the representation of book authors and the sale of motion picture and television rights in and to books. Since starting his literary agency\, Mr. Levine has sold over 150 fiction and non-fiction books to at least 50 different publishers and has had many books developed as movies-for-television and feature films.\nMr. Levine represents writers of thrillers\, mysteries\, women’s fiction\, and literary fiction\, plus non-fiction self-help\, how-to\, relationships\, memoirs\, health\, women’s issues\, pop culture\, new age\, and business. SUMMARY:South Bay (Zoom): A Literary Agent’s Guide to Sharpening Your Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:A Literary Agent’s Guide to Sharpening Your Manuscript\, with Elizabeth Kracht\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe bad news: even really good manuscripts have weak spots that can be sufficient to garner rejections from agents and publishers. The good news: most of these problems are easy to fix—once the writer knows how to identify them. Over her career\, literary agent Elizabeth Kracht noticed that many submissions had similar problems\, so she began to make a list of common pitfalls. During our meeting on February 15\, Elizabeth will walk us through the most salient items on her list\, drawing from cautionary real-world examples\, so our work is truly ready for agents\, publishers\, and readers. \nElizabeth Kracht is a literary agent at Kimberley Cameron & Associates. She represents both literary and commercial fiction as well as nonfiction\, and brings to the agency her experience as a former acquisitions editor\, freelance publicist\, and writer. \nIn fiction\, Elizabeth represents literary\, commercial\, women’s\, thrillers\, mysteries\, historical\, and crossover YA. In nonfiction\, she is interested in high concept\, health\, science\, environment\, prescriptive\, investigative\, true crime\, voice- or adventure-driven memoir\, sexuality\, spirituality\, and animal/pet stories. She thrives on working closely with authors to build their careers. \n\nWhen: Tuesday\, Feb 15th at 7pm \nWhere: Zoom – Members will be receiving an email with the Zoom invite \n \nBecome a South Bay Writers Member here \nIf you aren’t on our event email list yet\,  you can get a zoom meeting invite by contacting Tatyana Grinenko (pr@southbaywriters.com) who will add your email to the South Bay Writers publicity and Constant Contact list.

She helps clients understand the secret contract language of lawyers that so often sets traps for those without an “Esquire” behind their name.\n \n\nKendall is also an award-winning writer\, having won multiple journalism awards\, primarily for investigative reports and business and community journalism on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Kendall co-founded and served as Editor-in-Chief of two publications in Florida\, both of which she sold to larger media companies before moving to California in 2010. \n\n\nKendall is currently writing her first book\, “Lawyer-Proof Your Writing\,” based on presentations she has previously given to California Writers Club groups. \n\n\nKendall lives in Seal Beach\, California\, with her three children and too many pets. \n\n\n  \n\n\nNOTE: CWC-SFV members will receive a Zoom invitation to this presentation. CWC members from other branches who wish to attend should contact Monte Swann at cwcsfvhost@gmail.com by noon on February 4 for an invitation. Guests who are not members of CWC may purchase admission at www.cwc-sfv.org by noon on February 4. SUMMARY:Coastal Dunes (Zoom): Writing with Page-turning Tension
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: We have temporarily paused our in-person meetings at the Nipomo Library\, and our February 5th meeting will be held via Zoom only. \nIf you are on our emailing list\, you’ll receive a meeting announcement (with the Zoom login info) about a week prior to the meeting. If you’re not currently on our list\, please Email us. \n\nOur next meeting is Saturday\, February 5th\, 2022\, via Zoom\, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.\n\nSpeaker: Jordan Rosenfeld\nTopic: Writing with Page-turning Tension \nJordan Rosenfeld is author of three suspense novels\, most recently\, Women in Red\, and six books on the craft of writing\, most recently How to Write a Page Turner. Her articles and essays have appeared in such publications as The Atlantic\, The New York Times\, Scientific American\, The Writer\, Writer’s Digest Magazine and more. Jordan holds an MFA in Creative Writing & Literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars and a B.A. in Liberal Studies from the Hutchins School at Sonoma State University. \nJordan will be speaking about how to craft a story your readers can’t put down. Her presentation will contains tips to infuse page-turning tension into every aspect of your story or novel and even memoir. \nTension in novels\, stories\, and even memoirs is like the connective tissue that allows muscles to attach to bones\, and thus flex their might. It’s the heart of conflict\, the backbone of uncertainty\, the hallmark of danger. It keeps readers guessing and characters on their toes. When it’s working\, stories leave readers breathless and wanting more. When it’s missing\, scenes feel inconsequential\, the plot drags\, and characters meander.

SUMMARY:Berkeley (In Person): Poems That Tell Stories
DESCRIPTION:1/30 WORKSHOP – “The Narrative Gateway: Poems That Tell Stories” with Paul Corman Roberts\n\n\nWhether the narrative poem is situated in the classical omniscient third person or the lyrical “I\,” it has always served as one of the most popular and accessible forms of verse that opens the windows of the world up to more readers than perhaps any other form of poetry. In this workshop we will compare and contrast modern and postmodern narrative stylings that border on flash fiction\, and we will generate writing through close reading prompts and editing prompts that take “poetry” to a whole new level. Sharing of generated work will be optional. \nThis workshop\, led by Paul Corman Roberts\, will be held at the Joaquin Miller Ranger Station. \n\nPaul Corman-Roberts is the author of four chapbooks and two full-length collections of prose poetry\, including Bone Moon Palace from Nomadic Press. He is a four-time nominee for Pushcart\, Best of the Web\, and the Northern California Book Award. For his MA/MFA Graduate of the New College of California Poetics program\, he studied with David Meltzer\, Genny Lim\, and Neeli Cherkovski. In addition to teaching at SF Creative Writing Institute\, he also teaches workshops for the Older Writer’s Lab at the San Francisco Public Library and works in the Oakland Unified School District. He was a founder of the Beast Crawl Literary Festival in Oakland\, California and hosts a monthly generative poetry workshop called Muse@11. \nBecause COVID precautions are in place\, space is limited ~ register today at City Spark! $35 Public/$20 Members \n\n\n\nShare this:

SUMMARY:Central Coast (In Person): Storytelling Through Graphic Novels
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Through Graphic Novels\nIn recent decades\, graphic novels have matured from disreputable comic books to literature that wins Pulitzer and Newbery awards. They demand different storytelling abilities from both their creators and readers\, excel at communicating through metaphor\, and have been especially effective as memoir. Brian Fies will discuss graphic storytelling in general—how words plus images add up to more than the sum of their parts—and how he used comics to tell the story of community trauma and renewal during recent fires in his latest book\, A Fire Story. \nBrian Fies created the graphic novels A Fire Story\, Mom’s Cancer\, Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow\, and The Last Mechanical Monster. His work has received several honors\, including the comic industry’s Eisner\, Harvey\, and Inkpot awards. An animated version of his original Fire Story webcomic produced by San Francisco PBS station KQED won a television Emmy Award. He lives in Santa Rosa.
