SUMMARY:Orange County (In-Person): Writing Cozy Mysteries for Modern Readers
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nJennifer J. Chow\n\nTopic\n“Writing Cozy Mysteries for Modern Readers”\n\nLearn about what it takes to successfully reach today’s audience and stand out in a marketplace crowded with cozy mysteries from someone who knows.\n\n\nHer debut novel\, The 228 Legacy\, was about three generations of women in a Taiwanese American family\, each with closely guarded secrets. It garnered several awards and foreshadowed Jennifer’s ability to reach and relate to people of all ages. \nHer novels and short stories transcend age while drawing readers in with culture\, mystery\, and fantasy. A Master’s degree in social welfare and subsequent work with the elderly have helped to infuse her books with much needed doses of personal connection and warmth. \nTo learn more about the author\, visit https://jenniferjchow.com

SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): publishing platforms from print to electronic\, along with pitfalls to avoid
DESCRIPTION:Burroughs High School graduate and successful thriller writer Brett Battles will give the Ridge Writers program on Thursday\, July 7\, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Public invited\, admission free\, masks requested. \nBrett will discuss publishing platforms from print to electronic\, along with pitfalls to avoid. A USA Today bestselling as well as Barry Award-winning author of over forty novels\, including “Rewinder\,” the Jonathan Quinn series\, the Logan Harper series\, the Project Eden series and\, with Robert Gregory Browne\, he has coauthored the Alexandra Poe series \nHis first novel\, “The Cleaner” (2007)\, introduced recurring character Jonathan Quinn\, freelance intelligence operative who specializes in making bodies disappear. His second novel\, “The Deceived” (2008)\, won the Barry Award for Best Thriller. His third novel\, “Shadow of Betrayal” (published in the U.K. as “The Unwanted”) continues Quinn’s adventures. \nPublishers Weekly described “The Cleaner” as “displaying an enviable gift for pacing and action\, Battles’s debut novel is a page-turner that may remind some readers of the cult TV spy series ‘Alias.’ Admirers of quality espionage fiction can look forward to a new series worth following.” \nLooking on his formative years\, he has reflected\, “Brett Battles is that kid back in 6th grade who convinces his teacher that\, as an assignment\, everyone should write a short story that is at least 10 pages long. He received an A- on his project\, while another student (name withheld) received an A+. Brett’s not bitter about this\, nor does he ever think about the incident. Mostly.” One of the founding members of Killer Year\, and a member of Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers\, he cites Stephen King\, Robert Ludlum\, Graham Greene\, and Haruki Murakami as important influences on his worki. \nHe will follow his presentation with informal conversation and a book signing. Read more about him at www.brettbattles.com. Please come\, and please bring your friends.

SUMMARY:Mendocino (Zoom): Ekphrasis X—In Memory of Doug Fortier
DESCRIPTION:Launch of Ekphrasis X                                                    July 17 Meeting\, 3:00 p.m. Zoom \nThis meeting is dedicated to Doug Fortier\, who is responsible for creating Ekphrasis for WMC. Hear and see Doug’s 2020 and 2021 Ekphrasis pieces. Doug’s writing group will share anecdotes and some of Doug’s work\, and WMC members can recall some of their own great Doug moments. \n 1946 – 2022 \nWe might not have a Writers’ Club if it weren’t for Doug Fortier. \nA year or so after the founding\, the club was floundering. Doug held it together with determination and his conviction that getting together once a month to share our craft made us all better writers and might get us published. He had an amazing ability to network. Every writer who moved to the Mendocino Coast and showed the slightest interest was met by Doug. Almost always they joined WMC. Each month he welcomed new faces\, until today in this tiny community\, the club has grown to 85 members. \nDoug loved learning and believed there was always more to learn about writing.  He wanted our WMC speakers to teach us something new. At Board Meetings\, evaluating the past month’s program\, his greatest criticism was: “Not enough craft.” \nWe are one chapter of a state-wide organization\, the California Writers’ Club. Until he got too ill to travel\, Doug journeyed faithfully to the Bay Area to attend these meetings. Mercifully\, he kept the political shenanigans of what went on to himself. “How was it?” we would ask. “Nothing much to report\,” he’d say. \nHe was WMC’s social media guru\, posting news on our website\, keeping up with member publications\, and programs to come.  He designed the cover of every year’s anthology and\, with Amie McGee’s help\, put out a beautiful volume.  For Ekphrasis\, he photographed every artist’s work and put together a wonderful slide show to accompany our readings. \nHe was our person; we were his tribe. We will all miss him terribly.

SUMMARY:Central Coast (In-Person): Turning Memories into Art

SUMMARY:South Bay (Zoom): Series and Series Identity in Popular Fiction: Why to Consider Writing a Series
DESCRIPTION:“Series and Series Identity in Popular Fiction: Why to Consider Writing a Series\,” with Ross Browne\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour odds of successful publication can improve considerably if your novel is conceived as (or has the potential to work as) a series. This is no surprise to anyone who enjoys settling down with a new book in a series they know and love. It’s an easy purchase decision that publishers know they can rely on time and again. On August 8th\, Ross Browne will guide us through the crafting of the structure and identity of a series. \nSeries that inspire intense loyalty from readers\, the kind that truly moves the meter with book sales\, usually have more to offer their reading audiences than the same protagonist(s) from book to book. Ross’s Series and Series Identity presentation will explore the advantages of writing in series and look at what can be learned from successful series authors such as John Sandford\, Stieg Larsson\, Tana French\, Nelson DeMille\, CJ Box\, and Lee Child. While the focus of the discussion will be series that fall in the category of mystery/suspense\, the principles will be applicable to novels of just about any genre. \nAbout:\nRoss’s 28 years of experience as an editor includes scouting talent for a major New York literary agency\, developing a popular series of writers workshops\, and working closely with hundreds of authors from first draft to final publication\, as a developmental and line editor. Since 1998\, he has been in charge of editorial operations at The Editorial Department\, which offers numerous resources for writers\, from book planning to publishing support. He lives with his wife and son in Tucson\, Arizona\, and enjoys playing golf and watching baseball. \n  \n\nWhen: Monday\,  August 8th at 7pm \nWhere: Zoom – Please pay by August  7th to ensure you receive the Zoom link. \nAfter payment is received\, a ZOOM link will be emailed to you 15min PRIOR to the meeting. SUMMARY:Napa (In-Person): The Fourth Column
DESCRIPTION:Napa Valley Writers meets  second Wednesday of the month\n7 – 9 p.m.\n$5 Fee for members\, $7 for non-members. Students with ID – free. \n\nThe Fourth Column\n \n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Kevin Fisher-Paulson\, a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nEvery writer has one column in him.  The trick is to be the kind of writer who has one column in him every week. \nKevin will talk about the craft of writing from the perspective of purpose and structure.  Specifically\, Kevin will talk about the process of writing a weekly column for a major newspaper. The writer must learn how to open his soul without telling every secret\, and how to establish a rhythm and a voice.  The writer must learn to tell the truth\, but let the world act as a fact checker. \nKevin grapples with great issues but knows that the narrative must be satisfied in a 750-word count.  As the reputation of the column grows\, he must be aware of consistency\, fresh perspective\, and the assertive reader. \nThe writing process begins with a commitment to the creative self. As Kevin will explain\, everyone has an autobiography but not everyone has a memoir. \nKevin Fisher-Paulson earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Something Useless from the University of Michigan.  He has completed post-graduate coursework at the University of Iowa\, the University of Oregon\, Rutgers University\, and the New School. \nKevin is a weekly columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. \nIn addition to the weekly column\, he has published two books\, A Song for Lost Angels and How We Keep Spinning.  Song was nominated\, and a finalist for both the Benjamin Franklin Award as well as the Independent Book Publishers award. A portion of his memoir was published in the anthology When Love Lasts Forever by Pilgrim Press. \n Kevin’s works have been produced by ODC Summerfest\, the San Francisco Bay Area Dance Series\, the National AIDS Theater Festival and the Vital Signs Benefit for Healing Alternatives. \n Kevin lives in the mysterious outer\, outer\, outer\, outer Excelsior with two sons who have adopted him\, two dogs who adore him\, and a husband who endures him. \nwww.twopennypress.org \n \nKymberlie Ingalls will be August’s Member Reader. \nKymberlie is an award-winning essayist\, speaker\, editor\, and writing coach\, living in her native San Francisco Bay Area. The author of the successful sites Writer Of the Storm and Neuroticy = A Societal Madness and the books Bridges and 43\, she began blogging in the late 90s\, before it became the phenomenon that is prevalent today. Her work focuses on love\, grief\, with an examination of humanity and the heart. Beware of falling opinions.

Harsh inner critics\, fear of facing emotional truths\, and the tyranny of ingrained habits may hold us back from bringing our stories freely onto the page. As teachers and coaches\, Audrey Kalman and Jennifer Browdy are dedicated to helping writers overcome these challenges. Applying their decades of experience—Audrey as a novelist and birth doula\, Jennifer as a college professor and memoirist—they have developed the popular Birth Your Truest Story workshop series\, which helps writers hone their craft as they build community and commit to their writing practice. In this one-hour mini-workshop\, Jennifer and Audrey offer a series of powerful prompt-based exercises aimed at helping you befriend your inner critic\, transform your fear\, and shift your unproductive routines\, so that you can birth your truest story into the world! Find out more about the series at http://birthyourtrueststory.com. \nJennifer Browdy\, Ph.D. is a professor of literature\, writing and media arts at Bard College/Simon’s Rock\, where she has taught for more than 25 years; she also teaches online in the global Open Society University Network. Her memoir\, What I Forgot …And Why I Remembered\, was a finalist for the 2018 International Book Awards. Her writer’s guide\, The Elemental Journey of Purposeful Memoir\, won a 2017 Nautilus Silver Award. Her latest book\, winner of the 2022 Gold Nautilus Award\, is Purposeful Memoir as a Quest for a Thriving Future. Jennifer provides coaching and manuscript review for authors in fiction and nonfiction\, and offers writing workshops online and in person. \nAudrey Kalman writes fiction with a dark edge about what goes awry when human connection is missing from our lives. She is the author of three novels—The Last Storyteller\, What Remains Unsaid\, Dance of Souls\, and Tiny Shoes Dancing\, a short fiction collection shortlisted for the 2019 International Rubery Book Award. She holds a B.A. in creative writing from Simon’s Rock College of Bard and an M.A. in magazine journalism from Syracuse University. She was a 2020 Shuffle Collective literary resident\, past president of the SF Peninsula Branch of the California Writers Club\, and editor of three editions of the Fault Zone anthology. She previously worked as a birth doula and now offers editing and coaching services for writers. She lives in northern California and is at work on another novel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): Crossing the Lines and Dotting the Tease: When Fiction Mirrors Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:JEANNIE BARROGA CROSSES THE LINES\, DOTS THE TEASE\nAT OUR SEPTEMBER MEETING \nAward-winning playwright and author of “Turn Right at the Water Buffalo” Jeannie Barroga will speak about “Crossing the Lines and Dotting the Tease: When Fiction Mirrors Memoirs” for our general meeting\, Thursday\, September 1\, in the meeting room of Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Visitors welcome. Admission free. Mask requested. \nBarroga explains that “An early beta reader asked ‘Was this memoir all true?’ I said ‘Turn Right at The Water Buffalo’ was not a memoir; it’s a trip with ‘fictionalized facts.’ \nMy notes were thirty years old; the trip\, five years older. Listeners said my verbal details seemed fresher than my written descriptions. As in pitching plays\, a practice nurtured for 40-plus years writing them\, I creatively layer fiction among facts. Review what elicits audience responses\, on screen and onstage: ‘truths”— like the contrasting crunchy and chewy textures of a bagel—should already engage readers. Integrate carefully selected fiction—like ‘fresh lox or unspreadable cream cheese.’ \n“Internally I argued whether any writer needs to tag what is fictitious or not; I say\, no. With seams undetectable between fact and fiction\, a writer needs to tell a gripping\, relatable\, infuriating story\, to cross a line\, to tease\, cap\, and package. Determine in your ‘sandwich\,’ how.” \nBarroga\, Lifetime Dramatists Guild member\, is a published\, award-winning playwright whose works are in Stanford’s Special Collections. Among many plays\, she received the NEA Artistic Excellence Award. Twice a Literary Manager\, she has also directed at LaMama NY\, and acted in the cult film “I Am a Ghost.” \nHer talk will conclude with Q&A and a book signing. SUMMARY:Orange Co. (In-Person): Author’s Journey Series
DESCRIPTION:Kaira Rouda\n\n“Author’s Journey Series”\n\nKaira Rouda has led one of those “seen everything” types of lives you might expect a USA Today best-selling author to have: newspaper reporter\, columnist\, marketing executive\, and entrepreneur. \nThe characters of her salacious novels are left in the wake of a twisting and turning psychological thrill ride – every time. It’s why her legions of fans keep her at the top of the best-selling charts. \nMaking the leap from Midwest to West Coast living in 2009 didn’t slow Kaira down. When her husband won a U.S. Congressional seat in 2019\, it gave her yet another perspective of the world from which to draw. \nIntrigue\, deceit\, and personal aspiration are central themes once again with her latest best-seller “Somebody’s Home.” Kaira will be joining us to share her experience and sign books. \nTo learn more about the author\, visit https://kairarouda.com
