SUMMARY:Berkeley (In Person): Poems That Tell Stories
DESCRIPTION:1/30 WORKSHOP – “The Narrative Gateway: Poems That Tell Stories” with Paul Corman Roberts\n\n\nWhether the narrative poem is situated in the classical omniscient third person or the lyrical “I\,” it has always served as one of the most popular and accessible forms of verse that opens the windows of the world up to more readers than perhaps any other form of poetry. In this workshop we will compare and contrast modern and postmodern narrative stylings that border on flash fiction\, and we will generate writing through close reading prompts and editing prompts that take “poetry” to a whole new level. Sharing of generated work will be optional. \nThis workshop\, led by Paul Corman Roberts\, will be held at the Joaquin Miller Ranger Station. \n\nPaul Corman-Roberts is the author of four chapbooks and two full-length collections of prose poetry\, including Bone Moon Palace from Nomadic Press. He is a four-time nominee for Pushcart\, Best of the Web\, and the Northern California Book Award. For his MA/MFA Graduate of the New College of California Poetics program\, he studied with David Meltzer\, Genny Lim\, and Neeli Cherkovski. In addition to teaching at SF Creative Writing Institute\, he also teaches workshops for the Older Writer’s Lab at the San Francisco Public Library and works in the Oakland Unified School District. DESCRIPTION:Kendall Jones\n\n\nPublishing Contracts and Pitfalls\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nOn Saturday\, February 5\, at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, the San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club welcomes Attorney Kendall Jones\, with a presentation titled\, “Publishing Contracts and Pitfalls.” \n\n\nAn Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist once wrote: “Kendall Jones has red in her hair and a bit of bulldog in her personality.” In Georgia\, home of the National Champion University of Georgia Bulldogs\, that’s high praise. \n\n\nKendall Jones has been an attorney for more than 25 years and is licensed to practice law in four states\, including California. She is currently Vice President of Legal for California Pizza Kitchen Inc. in Costa Mesa\, California. Prior to her role at CPK\, Kendall was General Counsel of VS Media\, Inc.\, an entertainment and tech company in Westlake Village\, California. And prior to that\, she ran her own law firm for more than ten years. \n\n\nKendall is a recognized Contracts Ninja\, the go-to contract attorney for individuals in the entertainment and business worlds for decades. She helps clients understand the secret contract language of lawyers that so often sets traps for those without an “Esquire” behind their name.\n \n\nKendall is also an award-winning writer\, having won multiple journalism awards\, primarily for investigative reports and business and community journalism on the Gulf Coast of Florida. DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL MEETING FEBRUARY 7\, 2022\n5 PM TO 7 PM AT HESPERIA LIBRARY\n​FOURTH ANNUAL AFRICAN AMERICAN READ-IN\n \nMembers of the High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club (HDCWC) will feature Black voices\, current and classic\, at the Hesperia Library\, 9650 7th Avenue in Hesperia\, on Monday February 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. For a fourth year\, literary contributions from African Americans will be shared. The Read-In began thirty-two years ago by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. \nThe event will be emceed by T. Faye Griffin\, 3X NAACP Award winner\, Producer\, Best Selling Author\, Visual Artist\, and board member of Arts Connection\, the Arts Council of San Bernardino County. \nMembers and guests may read a 3–5-minute poem\, passage\, or even a condensed bio. They may also sing a song by an African-American composer or read a short scene from a play or movie. In the past the HDCWC has had readings of writers such as Maya Angelou\, Langston Hughes\, and Toni Morrison. The public can come early to sign up for a remaining spot.\n​\nThis event will be held in memory of Sandy Armistead\, 1921-2021 Sandy Armistead was an Apple Valley resident who passed away last year and experienced racism many times in his long life. HDCWC president\, Dwight Norris wrote his moving story in The Story of Sandy Armistead: A Black Man’s Journey in a White Man’s World\, published in 2018.

Mike’s extraordinary contribution of IT expertise is another example of how our High Desert Branch thrives through membership volunteerism of their individual talents. \nOn-Topic Speakers for You is the collection of HDCWC members who have volunteered to participate in public speaking engagements for organizations needing guest speakers. When I give lectures to beginning writers\, I find that they have very little idea of how they can go from slaving away on their keyboards at night and on weekends to actually quitting their day job.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. Levine “wears two hats”–he is a lawyer and a literary agent.\nMr. Levine has practiced entertainment law for almost 40 years\, specializing in the representation of writers\, producers\, actors\, directors\, composers\, musicians\, artists\, authors\, photographers\, galleries\, publishers\, developers\, production companies\, and theatre companies in the fields of motion pictures\, television\, interactive multimedia\, live stage\, recorded music\, concerts\, the visual arts\, publishing\, and advertising. In 1996\, Mr. Levine opened the Paul S. Levine Literary Agency\, specializing in the representation of book authors and the sale of motion picture and television rights in and to books. Since starting his literary agency\, Mr. Levine has sold over 150 fiction and non-fiction books to at least 50 different publishers and has had many books developed as movies-for-television and feature films.\nMr. Levine represents writers of thrillers\, mysteries\, women’s fiction\, and literary fiction\, plus non-fiction self-help\, how-to\, relationships\, memoirs\, health\, women’s issues\, pop culture\, new age\, and business. For both fiction and non-fiction books\, his biggest successes have been with authors who originally self-publish their books.

She taught Physical Education in Aylesbury\, England\, then worked as an Activities Director in Fargo\, ND for individuals with special needs. Later\, she was a Physical Education teacher and Dean of Students at Madison West High School\, and then was Waupaca Middle School Principal from 2017-2021. \nShe concurrently served in the Army National Guard from March 2001-2009 as a Military Police Officer. Laura deployed to Baghdad\, Iraq from March 2003 to July 2004. \nShe is now a leadership consultant and professional speaker with Strategic Leaders Academy. DESCRIPTION:Writing the Truth\n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Gil Gross\, an award-winning radio journalist who has reported the news to millions of Americans and interviewed pop culture icons and heads-of-state alike. \nWhen you write nonfiction\, whether it is political or just what the posies in the backyard look like\, you have to tell a story.  It’s like once upon a time\, except that everything has to be true.  I’ll look at how you do that\, what the responsibility is to your readers or listeners\, and how it can all go wrong\, even with the best intentions\, and why it so often does. \nGil has been Special Correspondent and Chief Anchor for ABC News Radio\, as well as a correspondent and anchor for CBS and NBC News.  As a newsman and humorist\, he has also combined his talents as Paul Harvey’s chief substitute at ABC and as the main substitute for Charles Osgood at CBS. \nA journalist for more than four decades\, Gil became the youngest anchorman in ABC News history at age 23. He went on to win a string of investigative and journalism awards for international reporting covering major events of our time from 9/11 to space launches to wars in the Middle East\, including the War in Iraq. His coverage of Hurricane Katrina won him the national Edward R. Murrow award\, though his most cherished awards have been for investigative reporting on the plight of mistreated children.  He has been nominated again this year by CBS News. \nHe has often combined network and local news duties out of a belief that state government usually has the most significant impact on the lives of listeners\, bringing together members of both parties to the point that when he left WABC in the 80’s for the network\, both Governor Cuomo of New York and Tom Kean of New Jersey showed up unexpectedly to be with him for the last hour of the show. \nHe has worked at iconic radio stations such as KGO\, WABC\, WCBS\, WOR\, WLS\, and WNBC and hosted his own national program for a number of years on CBS Radio.  Among the things he is proudest of accomplishing was raising millions of dollars for homeless charities including St. Anthony’s in San Francisco\, and being on the board for years of Community Access\, a charity serving the mentally ill homeless in New York City. \nGil now does specials for CBS News Radio\, produces podcasts for District Productive\, and has been acting\, especially in Shakespeare. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times\, the LA Times\, and many magazines. In 2019\, she published Writing Character\, a book chock-full of thoughts\, tips\, and prompts that is part of the Lit Starts series\, produced by The Writers Grotto.She is an energetic workshop leader\, and she covers the writing life at sinandsyntax.com. \n\n\n\n\nStorytellers—whether they are novelists\, memoirists\, or narrative journalists—know that characters are key to any great yarn. Readers love people\, and writers must deliver through short sketches to longer portraits to full-length biographies. Yet developing characters is trickier than you might think. Especially minor ones\, where few words must make an impression. Connie Hale\, who has made the profile her preferred form\, gives us readings\, interactive exercises\, and prompts from her book Writing Character. \nSkills you will Sharpen in this Workshop:\n\nRendering the physical presence of a person so that a reader might recognize the character on the street.\nCapturing a character’s inner life through observed      behaviors.\nNailing character in three descriptive words.\nTreating yourself—author\, narrator\, first-person voice—as       a character.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n8:30 – 9:00  – Check In \n9:00 – 12:00 – Workshop\n12:00 – 1:00 – Lunch\n\n\nCWC Mt.
