SUMMARY:San Fernando (Zoom): Celebrate Poetry Month
DESCRIPTION:Lynne Thompson: Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles \nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is honored to welcome Lynne Thompson\, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles\, as our guest speaker on April 2\, 2022 at 1:00\, via Zoom\, to help us celebrate National Poetry Month. \nAs a native Angeleno and daughter of Caribbean immigrants\, Thompson says that she is proud to serve as L.A. Poet Laureate and as a literary ambassador for literature in general and for poetry in particular.  While some question the importance of poetry in our lives\, she responds that when humanity experiences difficult or joyous times—births\, deaths\, weddings\, wars—they turn to the poets who wrap language around what they are feeling.  Her own poetry addresses ancestry and family\, as well as the events of our days. It is those poems that she is happy to share with us in celebration of National Poetry month. \nThompson was appointed Los Angeles’ Poet Laureate in 2021.  Her most recent collection of poems\, Fretwork\, was selected the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize winner and was published in 2019. A multiple Pushcart Prize nominee\, Thompson is the author of Beg No Pardon (Perugia Press)\, winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award\, and Start With A Small Guitar (What Books Press). \nHer work has been widely published and anthologized including in New England Review\, Ploughshares\, Massachusetts Review\, Colorado Review\, Pleiades\, and Best American Poetry 2020\, among others. Thompson serves on the Boards of Directors of Cave Canem and the Los Angeles Review of Books and is Chair of the Board of Trustees at her alma mater\, Scripps College. \nFor additional information\, please visit https://www.lynnethompson.us \n. . . . . \nNote:  CWC-SFV members will automatically receive an invitation to this presentation. CWC members from other branches should contact SVF VP/Zoom host Monte Swann by noon on March 1 to request a free invitation.  Other guests may purchase admission to this presentation at http://www.cwc-sfv.org by noon on April 1.  After purchasing admission\, they will receive a Zoom invitation.  We regret that we cannot accommodate late requests. \n

DESCRIPTION:Ridge Writers has announced the next “Read the Book\, Meet the Author” event\, David George on Thursday\, April 7\, 1:30 p.m. at Mac’s International Restaurant. Masks requested except while eating and drinking. \nRed Rock Books has the book in stock. Participants buy the book and read it in advance of the get-together. Sign up at Red Rock Books. The stories relate adventures that Granddad and his grandson experience while exploring nature together. Jeremy starts as a three-year-old and grows with each new chapter until the age of nine\, showing his magical transformation into a mature child. Jeremy becomes more aware of the natural world around him as he grows\, and Granddad reveals nature’s most important lessons through modern-day fables. With “Granddad’s Garden\,” the author has created a feel-good book for troubling times. \nHe will also give the Ridge Writers program on Thursday evening at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 6:30 p.m.\, no admission charge. This will not be the same as the afternoon’s presentation.

SUMMARY:South Bay (Zoom): Writing for Younger Readers: The Art of Edutainment
DESCRIPTION:April 11 7PM : Writing for Younger Readers: The Art of Edutainment with Two-Time Emmy Winner\, Sindy McKay-Swerdlove\nApr 4\, 2022 | Speaker\, Writing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChildren. Young adult. These rank among the most lucrative genres in today’s competitive market. But although they are easier to read\, they’re not necessarily easier to write. Crafting a compelling and instructive narrative that younger readers will eagerly follow is more challenging than it seems. If it’s too simple\, they’ll grow bored. If it’s too unwieldy\, they’ll give up in frustration. Strike the right balance\, however\, and you’ll strike gold. In our meeting on April 11\, two-time Emmy winner Sindy McKay-Swerdlove will guide us through the art of edutainment. \nFor the past forty years\, Sindy has built a world-class career around an area known as edutainment. This mixture of education and entertainment is ubiquitous in the world of children’s television\, particularly in animation. It is also found in most books written for children and in many electronic games. There is an art to disguising education within entertainment\, be it cognitive skills\, social skills\, or even fine motor skills. Sindy will shed light on this coveted art\, which she has thoroughly mastered. \nSindy is a two-time Emmy and three-time Humanitas award-winning animation writer specializing in edutainment and preschool projects. She began her writing career on the popular CBS television series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies\, for which she won an Emmy. She has since written and worked in development for nearly every major animation studio including Disney Studios\, Warner Bros.\, Universal\, Film Roman\, Sony\, Columbia/Tri-Star\, MGM\, and Apple TV. \nSindy developed and story-edited the PBS series Clifford The Big Red Dog\, nominated for an Emmy Award for two years running and winner of a Humanitas Prize for writing in 2001. She also developed the internationally successful series Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks\, which won the Emmy for Best Animated Children’s Program in 2006. \nAlong with her animation work\, Sindy has written over fifty children’s books for the educational We Both Read book series published by Treasure Bay and used in elementary schools across the U.S. She is currently writing on the Apple TV animated series Stillwater\, based on John J Muth’s award winning Zen books. \n  \n\nWhen: Monday\,  April 11th at 7pm \nWhere: Zoom – Please pay by April 10th to ensure you receive the Zoom link. \nAfter payment is received\, a ZOOM link will be emailed to you 15min PRIOR to the meeting. Some have published with HarperBusiness\, St. Martin’s Press\, Simon & Schuster\, and Chronicle Books\, while others have successfully self-published their books or worked with leading hybrid publishers.\n\nBorn in Australia\, she now calls Northern California home\, and she gets her kicks running through the Santa Cruz Mountains.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ins and Outs of Book Proposals\nBook proposals are the open secret of the publishing industry. For most non-fiction book submissions\, it’s what agents and editors want to see—not a full manuscript. More than just a pitch document for literary agents and publishers\, your book proposal will become the blueprint for your book as it moves along the path to publication: explaining to agents\, editors\, cover designers and publicists why your book is needed\, what it will do for its readers\, how they will discover it\, and why you are the ideal author to write it. In this event\, book proposal specialist Sally Collings explains the what\, why\, and how of book proposals. She will dispel some of the most common myths and provide a clear guide to writing your non-fiction book proposal.

SUMMARY:Central Coast (In Person): Gordo\, a Steinbeck Country Comedy in 11 Tragic Chapters
DESCRIPTION:Jaime Cortez\nGordo\, a Steinbeck Country Comedy\nin 11 Tragic Chapters \nJoin us as Jaime Cortez reads and discusses selections from his short story collection\, Gordo. Set in a migrant workers camp near Watsonville\, California\, in the 1970s\, the stories\, alternately tragic and comical\, introduce readers to a cast of rambunctious kids\, rebellious adolescents\, and the farm workers whose labor powers the mighty agricultural industry of central California while offering a sweet frankness about serious matters: Who belongs to America and how are they treated? How does one learn decency when laborers\, grown adults\, must fear for their lives just to bring home a paycheck and better their lives? What does the term “all-American” truly mean? \nJaime Cortez is a writer and visual artist based in Watsonville and San Francisco. His fiction\, essays\, and drawings have appeared in diverse publications that include Kindergarde: Experimental Writing For Children\, No Straight Lines(a 40-year compendium of LGBT comics)\, and Infinite Cities (an experimental atlas of San Francisco\, edited by Rebecca Solnit). Cortez often combines humor and tragedy to tell stories of resilient survivors on the margins of the economy\, the law\, and social acceptability. His debut collection of short stories\, Gordo\, was published in August 2021 and has garnered glowing reviews from the New York Times\, San Francisco Chronicle\, and National Public Radio.

SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): The Birth of a Book
DESCRIPTION:RIDGE WRITERS PRESENT THE BIRTH OF A BOOK – MAY 5 \nAuthor Danny Nielsen and publisher/editor Jennifer Crittenden will discuss the origin and process of their collaboration to bring Straight Flossin’ and Other Stories of the American West into the world\, at the Ridge Writers May 5 meeting\, starting 6:30 pm in the meeting room of Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Masks requested. Public welcome. Admission free. \nStraight Flossin’ is a collection of creative nonfiction essays about Niesen’s experiences working in desert landscapes\, both for pleasure and for his doctoral work in Environmental Science. The essays range from hair-raising stories about skunks and fires to philosophical musings about the American Dream\, water\, and environmental damage. The lovely illustrations in the book were drawn by Nielsen’s wife\, Sunny Noel Sawyer. \nStraight Flossin’ is Nielsen’s first book and the eighth book published by Whistling Rabbit Press\, Crittenden’s boutique publishing company. After publishing her own books\, Crittenden wanted to use Whistling Rabbit Press to produce other worthy books by shepherding them through the same process and using some of the same vendors she had used. \nIt was important to her personally to protect the authors from some of the predatory or flawed practices she had seen from other publishers or author service companies. Whistling Rabbit Press uses a “traditional publishing” model in that all financial risk is assumed by the publisher\, and the author is not expected to pay to be published. Other financial details will be reviewed during this evening conversation. \nCrittenden and Nielsen will share their discoveries from working under this model and offer takeaways for audience members about writing\, editing\, publishing\, and how they can have a positive experience publishing their own book. \nRidge Writers (ridgewriters@yahoo.com) is the East Sierra Branch of the 113-year-old California Writers Club (calwriters.org). The CWC traces its roots back to Jack London in the Bay Area and how has 22 branches throughout the state.

The diversified writer also has more money generating venues. Join us to find out what you need to know when adapting the written word to the screen. \n\n\n“With the wealth of streaming services and TV channels\, the rise of podcasts\, and online sites dedicated to specific film genres\, there is an increased demand for material. There is no reason why that next blockbuster\, or the next best adapted screenplay Oscar or Emmy can’t comefrom something you have written. And while you may not wish to engage in turning your own narrative into a screenplay\, you may want to know a thing or two about what will happen if someone else is hired to do so. \n\n\n“In this upcoming presentation\, we will touch on basic rules one should follow when adapting a piece to the screen\, including the do’s and don’ts. The presentation will also touch on how you can make your own narrative writing more appealing to producers.” \n\n\nAnat Golan-Wenick is an optioned screenwriter and a freelance Script Analyst who provides development notes to production companies seeking to adapt material to the screen.
