Masks required. \nAiming her spellbinding tales at the YA market (and some younger as well as older readers)\, Kelsey sets her tales in the Dells\, a land of humans and mystics. Mystics have differently colored streaks in their hair\, each hue revealing their individual powers: magic\, light\, emotions\, and others. Blue\, yellow\, pink\, and so on. But Alina\, born with a red streak\, poses a quandary because nobody ever had a red streak before. Kelsey explores a maze of questions of identity\, self-acceptance\, and self-doubt throughout Alina’s story. Ultimately\, the message emerges that we should understand our power even if we don’t think we have any. \nNow hard at work on her third book\, Kelsey feels that she always had a flare for imagination. She started writing in the third grade\, with a yarn about how a skunk got its stripe. In fact\, she says\, “I essentially wrote if for myself at 14. DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Through Graphic Novels\nIn recent decades\, graphic novels have matured from disreputable comic books to literature that wins Pulitzer and Newbery awards. They demand different storytelling abilities from both their creators and readers\, excel at communicating through metaphor\, and have been especially effective as memoir. Brian Fies will discuss graphic storytelling in general—how words plus images add up to more than the sum of their parts—and how he used comics to tell the story of community trauma and renewal during recent fires in his latest book\, A Fire Story. \nBrian Fies created the graphic novels A Fire Story\, Mom’s Cancer\, Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow\, and The Last Mechanical Monster. His work has received several honors\, including the comic industry’s Eisner\, Harvey\, and Inkpot awards. An animated version of his original Fire Story webcomic produced by San Francisco PBS station KQED won a television Emmy Award. He lives in Santa Rosa.

DESCRIPTION:1/30 WORKSHOP – “The Narrative Gateway: Poems That Tell Stories” with Paul Corman Roberts\n\n\nWhether the narrative poem is situated in the classical omniscient third person or the lyrical “I\,” it has always served as one of the most popular and accessible forms of verse that opens the windows of the world up to more readers than perhaps any other form of poetry. In this workshop we will compare and contrast modern and postmodern narrative stylings that border on flash fiction\, and we will generate writing through close reading prompts and editing prompts that take “poetry” to a whole new level. Sharing of generated work will be optional. \nThis workshop\, led by Paul Corman Roberts\, will be held at the Joaquin Miller Ranger Station. \n\nPaul Corman-Roberts is the author of four chapbooks and two full-length collections of prose poetry\, including Bone Moon Palace from Nomadic Press. He is a four-time nominee for Pushcart\, Best of the Web\, and the Northern California Book Award. For his MA/MFA Graduate of the New College of California Poetics program\, he studied with David Meltzer\, Genny Lim\, and Neeli Cherkovski. In addition to teaching at SF Creative Writing Institute\, he also teaches workshops for the Older Writer’s Lab at the San Francisco Public Library and works in the Oakland Unified School District. If you’re not currently on our list\, please Email us. \n\nOur next meeting is Saturday\, February 5th\, 2022\, via Zoom\, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.\n\nSpeaker: Jordan Rosenfeld\nTopic: Writing with Page-turning Tension \nJordan Rosenfeld is author of three suspense novels\, most recently\, Women in Red\, and six books on the craft of writing\, most recently How to Write a Page Turner. Her articles and essays have appeared in such publications as The Atlantic\, The New York Times\, Scientific American\, The Writer\, Writer’s Digest Magazine and more. Jordan holds an MFA in Creative Writing & Literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars and a B.A. in Liberal Studies from the Hutchins School at Sonoma State University. \nJordan will be speaking about how to craft a story your readers can’t put down. Her presentation will contains tips to infuse page-turning tension into every aspect of your story or novel and even memoir. \nTension in novels\, stories\, and even memoirs is like the connective tissue that allows muscles to attach to bones\, and thus flex their might. It’s the heart of conflict\, the backbone of uncertainty\, the hallmark of danger. It keeps readers guessing and characters on their toes. When it’s working\, stories leave readers breathless and wanting more. When it’s missing\, scenes feel inconsequential\, the plot drags\, and characters meander.

She is currently Vice President of Legal for California Pizza Kitchen Inc. in Costa Mesa\, California. Prior to her role at CPK\, Kendall was General Counsel of VS Media\, Inc.\, an entertainment and tech company in Westlake Village\, California. And prior to that\, she ran her own law firm for more than ten years. \n\n\nKendall is a recognized Contracts Ninja\, the go-to contract attorney for individuals in the entertainment and business worlds for decades. She helps clients understand the secret contract language of lawyers that so often sets traps for those without an “Esquire” behind their name.\n \n\nKendall is also an award-winning writer\, having won multiple journalism awards\, primarily for investigative reports and business and community journalism on the Gulf Coast of Florida. DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL MEETING FEBRUARY 7\, 2022\n5 PM TO 7 PM AT HESPERIA LIBRARY\n​FOURTH ANNUAL AFRICAN AMERICAN READ-IN\n \nMembers of the High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club (HDCWC) will feature Black voices\, current and classic\, at the Hesperia Library\, 9650 7th Avenue in Hesperia\, on Monday February 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. For a fourth year\, literary contributions from African Americans will be shared. The Read-In began thirty-two years ago by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. \nThe event will be emceed by T. Faye Griffin\, 3X NAACP Award winner\, Producer\, Best Selling Author\, Visual Artist\, and board member of Arts Connection\, the Arts Council of San Bernardino County. \nMembers and guests may read a 3–5-minute poem\, passage\, or even a condensed bio. They may also sing a song by an African-American composer or read a short scene from a play or movie. In the past the HDCWC has had readings of writers such as Maya Angelou\, Langston Hughes\, and Toni Morrison. The public can come early to sign up for a remaining spot.\n​\nThis event will be held in memory of Sandy Armistead\, 1921-2021 Sandy Armistead was an Apple Valley resident who passed away last year and experienced racism many times in his long life. HDCWC president\, Dwight Norris wrote his moving story in The Story of Sandy Armistead: A Black Man’s Journey in a White Man’s World\, published in 2018.

Jim Grayson\, Emmalisa Hill\, Joan Rudder Ward and Dwight Norris will each do presentations of different topics available through the speakers’ bureau created by HDCWC Programs/Publicity Chair Bob Isbill. \nThis presentation\, coinciding with the publication of its online website\, will establish the program’s ultimate goal which is to get our CWC writers “out there” to do public talks and sell their books. The website www.ontopicspeakers.com\, populated by months of work by HDCWC Vice President and On Topic webmaster\, Mike Apodaca\, will be published on February 1\, 2022 to debut the first of many efforts to publicize our writers with something to say. Mike’s extraordinary contribution of IT expertise is another example of how our High Desert Branch thrives through membership volunteerism of their individual talents. \nOn-Topic Speakers for You is the collection of HDCWC members who have volunteered to participate in public speaking engagements for organizations needing guest speakers. The new website will offer those seeking keynote speakers the opportunity to select a speaker by a certain topic\, and to contact that  particular presenter to arrange event presentation. The four presentations illustrate the variety of over fifty topics available on our website to organizations looking for guest speakers.  The topics are: \nWHAT DO YOUR DREAMS MEAN?
