Gonzales will teach you how to write diverse characters in a rich and meaningful way that humanizes them. \nMichelle Cruz Gonzales is an English professor and author of the memoir\, The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk which is taught in in colleges and Universities in colleges all over the United States. She has essay and fiction in anthologies by Putnam\, PM Press\, Seal Press\, and Literary Kitchen\, and she has published online in Longreads\,  The Los Angeles Review of Books\, Latino Rebels\, and Mitu. She recently completed a satirical novel about near-future-California that secedes from the US and forces intermarriage between whites and Mexicanos for the purpose of creating a race of beautiful\, intelligent\, hardworking people\, and she is currently at work on a screenplay. \nIn the 1980s and 1990s\, Gonzales was a member of three all women punk bands\, Bitch Fight\, Kamala and the Karivores\, and Spitboy. Never interested in playing music with men\, Gonzales\, primarily a drummer and lyricist\, toured nationally and internationally with Spitboy whose lyrics focused on women and gender issues. In 2016\, Gonzales published The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band\, about her experiences as the only person of color in Spitboy and what it was like being a person of color in the predominately white Bay Area punk scene. The diversified writer also has more money generating venues. Join us to find out what you need to know when adapting the written word to the screen. \n\n\n“With the wealth of streaming services and TV channels\, the rise of podcasts\, and online sites dedicated to specific film genres\, there is an increased demand for material. There is no reason why that next blockbuster\, or the next best adapted screenplay Oscar or Emmy can’t comefrom something you have written. And while you may not wish to engage in turning your own narrative into a screenplay\, you may want to know a thing or two about what will happen if someone else is hired to do so. \n\n\n“In this upcoming presentation\, we will touch on basic rules one should follow when adapting a piece to the screen\, including the do’s and don’ts. The presentation will also touch on how you can make your own narrative writing more appealing to producers.” \n\n\nAnat Golan-Wenick is an optioned screenwriter and a freelance Script Analyst who provides development notes to production companies seeking to adapt material to the screen. Anat provided notes to companies like Amazon studios\, Crispy Twig Productions\, Stage32\, and various screenplay contests. She evaluated screenplays\, stage plays\, fiction and non-fiction books\, TV pilots and articles. Some of the projects Anat provided notes on include movies like Ex-Machina\, Love and Mercy and Beautiful Disaster\, which is currently in production. His poems take us on a whirlwind tour of an eclectic and exciting life as an actor and Zen Buddhist priest\, meandering from love affairs to marriage to divorce to the Sixties to psychedelic spirituality and beyond.  Written over several decades\, they read as a collage\, each piece distinct and contributing to a cohesive lyric narrative. \nThe Lone Ranger and Tonto Meet Buddha\, an intersection of performance and Zen\, was also published in 2021. His earlier works were best-selling memoirs\, Sleeping Where I Fall and The Rainman’s Third Cure.  He is working on another book\, Vernacular Zen\, which will be released in 2022. \nAn accomplished actor in more than 130 films\, Peter Coyote is also a director\, screenwriter\, and narrator.  He won an Emmy award for his narration of the ten-part PBS series The Pacific Century.  He has also narrated eight Ken Burns documentaries\, including The Roosevelts for which he won a second Emmy. Coyote is a politically engaged individual who champions a multitude of causes. He is also a Zen Buddhist priest as well as a songwriter\, guitarist\, and singer. In our meeting on April 11\, two-time Emmy winner Sindy McKay-Swerdlove will guide us through the art of edutainment. \nFor the past forty years\, Sindy has built a world-class career around an area known as edutainment. This mixture of education and entertainment is ubiquitous in the world of children’s television\, particularly in animation. It is also found in most books written for children and in many electronic games. There is an art to disguising education within entertainment\, be it cognitive skills\, social skills\, or even fine motor skills. Sindy will shed light on this coveted art\, which she has thoroughly mastered. \nSindy is a two-time Emmy and three-time Humanitas award-winning animation writer specializing in edutainment and preschool projects. She began her writing career on the popular CBS television series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies\, for which she won an Emmy. She has since written and worked in development for nearly every major animation studio including Disney Studios\, Warner Bros.\, Universal\, Film Roman\, Sony\, Columbia/Tri-Star\, MGM\, and Apple TV. \nSindy developed and story-edited the PBS series Clifford The Big Red Dog\, nominated for an Emmy Award for two years running and winner of a Humanitas Prize for writing in 2001. DESCRIPTION:Lynne Thompson: Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles \nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is honored to welcome Lynne Thompson\, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles\, as our guest speaker on April 2\, 2022 at 1:00\, via Zoom\, to help us celebrate National Poetry Month. \nAs a native Angeleno and daughter of Caribbean immigrants\, Thompson says that she is proud to serve as L.A. Poet Laureate and as a literary ambassador for literature in general and for poetry in particular.  While some question the importance of poetry in our lives\, she responds that when humanity experiences difficult or joyous times—births\, deaths\, weddings\, wars—they turn to the poets who wrap language around what they are feeling.  Her own poetry addresses ancestry and family\, as well as the events of our days. It is those poems that she is happy to share with us in celebration of National Poetry month. \nThompson was appointed Los Angeles’ Poet Laureate in 2021.  Her most recent collection of poems\, Fretwork\, was selected the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize winner and was published in 2019. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings forever transformed public perception. For the first time\, fantasy could be considered serious literature\, its masterworks on par with the classics of any other genre. In recent decades\, fantasy has surged in popularity\, providing ample blockbuster material for Hollywood. But what specifically makes fantasy stand out? And how can you incorporate its many treasures into your own writing\, regardless of your chosen genre? \nIn our meeting on March 14\, Eric Witchey will walk us through the magic of the fantastic. \nEric Witchey has sold over 100 short stories and several novels. DESCRIPTION:Writing the Truth\n\n\nNapa Valley Writers will host Gil Gross\, an award-winning radio journalist who has reported the news to millions of Americans and interviewed pop culture icons and heads-of-state alike. \nWhen you write nonfiction\, whether it is political or just what the posies in the backyard look like\, you have to tell a story.  It’s like once upon a time\, except that everything has to be true.  I’ll look at how you do that\, what the responsibility is to your readers or listeners\, and how it can all go wrong\, even with the best intentions\, and why it so often does. \nGil has been Special Correspondent and Chief Anchor for ABC News Radio\, as well as a correspondent and anchor for CBS and NBC News.  As a newsman and humorist\, he has also combined his talents as Paul Harvey’s chief substitute at ABC and as the main substitute for Charles Osgood at CBS. \nA journalist for more than four decades\, Gil became the youngest anchorman in ABC News history at age 23. He went on to win a string of investigative and journalism awards for international reporting covering major events of our time from 9/11 to space launches to wars in the Middle East\, including the War in Iraq. His coverage of Hurricane Katrina won him the national Edward R. Murrow award\, though his most cherished awards have been for investigative reporting on the plight of mistreated children.  He has been nominated again this year by CBS News. \nHe has often combined network and local news duties out of a belief that state government usually has the most significant impact on the lives of listeners\, bringing together members of both parties to the point that when he left WABC in the 80’s for the network\, both Governor Cuomo of New York and Tom Kean of New Jersey showed up unexpectedly to be with him for the last hour of the show. \nHe has worked at iconic radio stations such as KGO\, WABC\, WCBS\, WOR\, WLS\, and WNBC and hosted his own national program for a number of years on CBS Radio.  Among the things he is proudest of accomplishing was raising millions of dollars for homeless charities including St. Anthony’s in San Francisco\, and being on the board for years of Community Access\, a charity serving the mentally ill homeless in New York City. \nGil now does specials for CBS News Radio\, produces podcasts for District Productive\, and has been acting\, especially in Shakespeare.
