Less is more. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote\, “A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it.” No room for fluff or filler. Just pure narrative propulsion that packs a punch. Neil Gaiman has observed\, “A short story is the ultimate close-up magic trick – a couple of thousand words to take you around the universe or break your heart.” The recently released Hollywood film The Black Phone was adapted from a short story. So were many other cinematic classics. In light of today’s shrinking attention spans\, the short story is an especially compelling option to land a distracted reader’s attention. During our meeting on September 12\, Brent van Staalduinen will guide us through the process of crafting an unforgettable short story that will win a writing contest and/or be accepted by a journal. \nAbout: \nBrent is an award-winning novelist and short story writer from Ontario\, Canada\, and the author of the novels Boy\, Nothing But Life\, Saints\, and Unexpected\, as well as the short story collection Cut Road. DESCRIPTION:September 10th – Christobel Kent\n\n\nWriting Setting: From Italy to Britain\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome bestselling author Christobel Kent as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, September 10 at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, with a presentation titled “Writing Setting: From Italy to Britain.” \n\n\nKent has had seventeen novels published: the first four being standalone thrillers set in Italy\, followed by the six novels in the Sandro Cellini Florentine detective series. Since then she has written seven psychological thrillers roughly in the ‘domestic noir’ genre\, including the Sunday Times bestseller The Loving Husband. She now lives in both Cambridge and Florence with her husband and five children. \n\n\nKent will speak about her personal trajectory as a writer\, and how she used a period living in Florence as her springboard to becoming an author.  Her first nine books were set in Italy\, principally Tuscany – her trademark being skillful immersion in Italian life.  The books did reasonably well but her big breakthrough came when she finally turned her attention to her own country\, something\, she says she’d been putting off\, for a mixture of superstition and prejudice that’s fairly common among writers. \n\n\nThe first of these homegrown works\, The Crooked House\, set in a part of the UK she grew up in\, received critical acclaim and her second English novel\, The Loving Husband became a Sunday Times bestseller and ended up selling 200\,000 copies across the media. On August 8th\, Ross Browne will guide us through the crafting of the structure and identity of a series. \nSeries that inspire intense loyalty from readers\, the kind that truly moves the meter with book sales\, usually have more to offer their reading audiences than the same protagonist(s) from book to book. DESCRIPTION:Launch of Ekphrasis X                                                    July 17 Meeting\, 3:00 p.m. Zoom \nThis meeting is dedicated to Doug Fortier\, who is responsible for creating Ekphrasis for WMC. Hear and see Doug’s 2020 and 2021 Ekphrasis pieces. Doug’s writing group will share anecdotes and some of Doug’s work\, and WMC members can recall some of their own great Doug moments. \n 1946 – 2022 \nWe might not have a Writers’ Club if it weren’t for Doug Fortier. \nA year or so after the founding\, the club was floundering. Doug held it together with determination and his conviction that getting together once a month to share our craft made us all better writers and might get us published. He had an amazing ability to network. Every writer who moved to the Mendocino Coast and showed the slightest interest was met by Doug. Almost always they joined WMC. Each month he welcomed new faces\, until today in this tiny community\, the club has grown to 85 members. \nDoug loved learning and believed there was always more to learn about writing.  He wanted our WMC speakers to teach us something new. At Board Meetings\, evaluating the past month’s program\, his greatest criticism was: “Not enough craft.” \nWe are one chapter of a state-wide organization\, the California Writers’ Club. Until he got too ill to travel\, Doug journeyed faithfully to the Bay Area to attend these meetings. Mercifully\, he kept the political shenanigans of what went on to himself. “How was it?” we would ask. “Nothing much to report\,” he’d say. \nHe was WMC’s social media guru\, posting news on our website\, keeping up with member publications\, and programs to come.  He designed the cover of every year’s anthology and\, with Amie McGee’s help\, put out a beautiful volume.  For Ekphrasis\, he photographed every artist’s work and put together a wonderful slide show to accompany our readings. \nHe was our person; we were his tribe. We will all miss him terribly.

Gonzales will teach you how to write diverse characters in a rich and meaningful way that humanizes them. \nMichelle Cruz Gonzales is an English professor and author of the memoir\, The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk which is taught in in colleges and Universities in colleges all over the United States. She has essay and fiction in anthologies by Putnam\, PM Press\, Seal Press\, and Literary Kitchen\, and she has published online in Longreads\,  The Los Angeles Review of Books\, Latino Rebels\, and Mitu. She recently completed a satirical novel about near-future-California that secedes from the US and forces intermarriage between whites and Mexicanos for the purpose of creating a race of beautiful\, intelligent\, hardworking people\, and she is currently at work on a screenplay. \nIn the 1980s and 1990s\, Gonzales was a member of three all women punk bands\, Bitch Fight\, Kamala and the Karivores\, and Spitboy. Never interested in playing music with men\, Gonzales\, primarily a drummer and lyricist\, toured nationally and internationally with Spitboy whose lyrics focused on women and gender issues. In 2016\, Gonzales published The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band\, about her experiences as the only person of color in Spitboy and what it was like being a person of color in the predominately white Bay Area punk scene. The diversified writer also has more money generating venues. Join us to find out what you need to know when adapting the written word to the screen. \n\n\n“With the wealth of streaming services and TV channels\, the rise of podcasts\, and online sites dedicated to specific film genres\, there is an increased demand for material. There is no reason why that next blockbuster\, or the next best adapted screenplay Oscar or Emmy can’t comefrom something you have written. And while you may not wish to engage in turning your own narrative into a screenplay\, you may want to know a thing or two about what will happen if someone else is hired to do so. \n\n\n“In this upcoming presentation\, we will touch on basic rules one should follow when adapting a piece to the screen\, including the do’s and don’ts. The presentation will also touch on how you can make your own narrative writing more appealing to producers.” \n\n\nAnat Golan-Wenick is an optioned screenwriter and a freelance Script Analyst who provides development notes to production companies seeking to adapt material to the screen. Anat provided notes to companies like Amazon studios\, Crispy Twig Productions\, Stage32\, and various screenplay contests. She evaluated screenplays\, stage plays\, fiction and non-fiction books\, TV pilots and articles. Some of the projects Anat provided notes on include movies like Ex-Machina\, Love and Mercy and Beautiful Disaster\, which is currently in production.
