DESCRIPTION:December 3rd – Dacre Stoker\n\n\nStoker on Stoker: The Mysteries Behind the Writing of Dracula\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome bestselling author Dacre Stoker as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, December 3rd at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, with a presentation titled “Stoker on Stoker: The Mysteries Behind the Writing of Dracula.” \n\n\nDacre Stoker is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker and the international best-selling co-author of Dracula the Un-Dead\, the official Stoker family endorsed sequel to Dracula. Dacre is also the co-editor (with Elizabeth Miller) of The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years. Released in October of 2018\, Dracul\, a prequel to Dracula\, co-authored with JD Barker\, was the UK’s # 1 Bestselling Hardcover Novel in Horror and Supernatural in 2018\, and a top 5 finalist by the Horror Writers Association for the Bram Stoker Award® for Superior Achievement in a Novel. DESCRIPTION:WRITING FLASH FICTION\nElizabeth Stix \nSunday\, November 20\, 3 p.m. Zoom \nAccording to novelist and short story writer Peter Orner\, “The difference between a short story and a novel is the difference between a pang in your heart compared to the tragedy of your whole life. It’s all a matter of how you feel the pain.” This is even more true with flash fiction. There’s no strict definition of flash: some say it’s anything under 2\,000 words\, some say 500 words\, others say even shorter than that. While a work of flash fiction contains elements of a short story\, in flash these aspects are often compressed or implied. It’s a form that invites playfulness and experimentation. In this workshop\, you’ll learn what makes a great flash story pop off the page\, and use prompts to create flash stories of your own. \nBay Area native Elizabeth Stix’s short stories have appeared in McSweeney’s\, Tin House\, Ploughshares\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, The Los Angeles TimesSunday magazine\, and elsewhere. Her flash fiction is anthologized in Best Microfiction 2019 and won second prize in The Southampton Review Short-short Fiction Contest. The episode ‘The Stage; Following our Wildest Dreams!’ won\, ‘Best Narrative Episode\,’ at the 2022 ACM Western Region WAVE Cable TV Awards. \n\nChris and daughter\, Hannah\n\nBattling prostate cancer in his lungs since 2009\, Chris has decided that “Instead of sulking\, (he’s) busy achieving (his) potential.” His 3500-word memoir\, ‘This is What I just Went Through’ will be published early in 2023. He is also writing a memoir – Touched by Hannah – about a man with cancer (Hennessy)\, his 1 lb. newborn Hannah\, and their fight for life. ‘Miracles\,’ a promotional film for ‘Touched by Hannah’ took a ‘Film Heals’ award at the 2022 Manhattan Film Festival in NYC. The festival has been known as a place to celebrate filmmakers who use film to promote peace\, humanity\, and inspiration. \nRecently\, Hennessy wrote and had 6 articles published in local newspapers\, and has written/produced 4 award-winning films since October 2021. As well as studying the classics and English Literature\, he has a PhD in philosophy and an MFA in Film and TV. His filmmaking career spans the full spectrum\, from concept to composite\, working in preproduction\, production\, and postproduction. Also\, he was a script doctor at Paramount and Columbia. Films he has worked on include The Conversation and Godfather II\, as well as writing for the TV show\, Hotel. He has just finished a screenplay called The Street of Chance. His most recent book is Supermetaphysics\, and he is working on a novel. \n\n\nThis in-depth and fascinating presentation will explore the root meaning of the word Myth and see it in light of its power and passion in works of art from the Greeks to the present. Nietzsche said all storytelling must have passion\, Dionysius must be present. We will see that is so in flesh and blood\, that is the characters or actors who bring the story alive for us. Exploring intergenerational exchanges helps us to better understand ourselves and each other as our life experiences intersect. This evening’s talk sheds light on how we\, as writers\, can capture the differences and commonalities in the conversations between a grandparent and a child\, a teacher and a student\, a new-hire and a retiree\, or any characters from multigenerational settings in our stories\, encouraging our readers to stop stigma\, cultivate empathy\, and learn from the knowledge gaps that destabilize our communities. \nAbout Lyndsey Ellis\n\n\n\nLyndsey Ellis is a writer\, editor\, and teaching artist with work that has appeared in Kweli Journal\, Catapult\, Electric Literature\, The Rumpus\, Joyland\, Shondaland\, and several anthologies. She was a recipient of the San Francisco Foundation’s Joseph Henry Jackson Literary Award and Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for her fiction. This is a myth. His compositions underwent extensive revisions prior to performances. As Orison Swett Marden points out\, “Great writers have ever been known for their tenacity of purpose. Their works have not been flung off from minds aglow with genius\, but have been elaborated and elaborated into grace and beauty\, until every trace of their efforts has been obliterated.” \nWe must adopt the same patient\, persistent\, and workmanlike approach. In our meeting on October 10\, poet and novelist Jennifer Givhan will guide us through the nuts and bolts of how to revise\, rewrite\, and reimagine our work from the inside out. \nAbout: \n\nJennifer earned her Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Poetry from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina and her Master’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at California State University Fullerton\, where she was the recipient of the Graduate Equity Fellowship. It has been adapted into a feature film for release later this year. Her short stories have been published in literary magazines across the country including The Gypsy Moon\, which was featured in Ms. Magazine. Many of her plays have been produced\, including Soundings which was a Los Angeles Times critics pick. \n\n\nBeverly was Artist-in-Residence”for UCLA Osher’s Lifelong Learning Institute. She teaches courses in Writing and Theatre at UCLA\, The University of Washington and at Cal State Channel Islands. She also directed the award-winning The Manor at Greystone Mansion\, which has been running for eighteen years. Beverly was honored as “Distinguished Instructor” by UCLA Extension to recognize her “exemplary teaching and excellence that foster learning and discovery among her students.” \n\n\nHer non-fiction publications have sold over four million copies worldwide. Her background also includes work as an Associate Director with the California State Universities and as an Academic Director in Oxford\, England. Less is more. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote\, “A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it.” No room for fluff or filler. Just pure narrative propulsion that packs a punch. Neil Gaiman has observed\, “A short story is the ultimate close-up magic trick – a couple of thousand words to take you around the universe or break your heart.” The recently released Hollywood film The Black Phone was adapted from a short story. So were many other cinematic classics. In light of today’s shrinking attention spans\, the short story is an especially compelling option to land a distracted reader’s attention. During our meeting on September 12\, Brent van Staalduinen will guide us through the process of crafting an unforgettable short story that will win a writing contest and/or be accepted by a journal. \nAbout: \nBrent is an award-winning novelist and short story writer from Ontario\, Canada\, and the author of the novels Boy\, Nothing But Life\, Saints\, and Unexpected\, as well as the short story collection Cut Road. His short stories have appeared in Hamilton Magazine\, The Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology\, The Prairie Journal\, The New Guard Literary Review\, The Nottingham Review\, and many other literary publications. DESCRIPTION:September 10th – Christobel Kent\n\n\nWriting Setting: From Italy to Britain\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome bestselling author Christobel Kent as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, September 10 at 1:00 pm via Zoom\, with a presentation titled “Writing Setting: From Italy to Britain.” \n\n\nKent has had seventeen novels published: the first four being standalone thrillers set in Italy\, followed by the six novels in the Sandro Cellini Florentine detective series. Since then she has written seven psychological thrillers roughly in the ‘domestic noir’ genre\, including the Sunday Times bestseller The Loving Husband. She now lives in both Cambridge and Florence with her husband and five children. \n\n\nKent will speak about her personal trajectory as a writer\, and how she used a period living in Florence as her springboard to becoming an author.  Her first nine books were set in Italy\, principally Tuscany – her trademark being skillful immersion in Italian life.  The books did reasonably well but her big breakthrough came when she finally turned her attention to her own country\, something\, she says she’d been putting off\, for a mixture of superstition and prejudice that’s fairly common among writers. \n\n\nThe first of these homegrown works\, The Crooked House\, set in a part of the UK she grew up in\, received critical acclaim and her second English novel\, The Loving Husband became a Sunday Times bestseller and ended up selling 200\,000 copies across the media.
