SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): STEM\, Graphic Novels\, and Traditional Print
DESCRIPTION:KAREN BLAKE LOOKS AT STEM\, GRAPHIC NOVELS\, AND TRADITIONAL PRINT \nJanuary 5\, 2023 \nAward-winning writer and poet\, and also a STEM game and book publisher\, Karen Blake will give the Ridge Writers January 5\, 2023 program that starts at 6:30 p.m\, at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Pubic invited. Admission free. Masks requested. \nHer awareness of the importance of STEM education focuses on encouraging kids to learn about how the world works. This goes beyond science and into the world of business. She accomplishes this through games. She launched STEMdelivered.org and Rhizomes Books\, Inc. in 2011 following her run for Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2010. It was her way of meeting the talent required to form the technical team for her publishing company that released two products in 2014\, “Physics on the River” (a visual novel) and “Matwa Finds a Brother” (a children’s book). The matching game\, Antelope UP\, is available on multiple platforms. \nFor her program\, she will discuss finding outlets for her new projects\, whether there is a STEM market if members want to break into writing for it\, and given her background ranging from graphic novels to traditional print\, she will examine the features they would need to succeed such as strong plots and characters\, as well as what to know about illustrations\, lettering\, any software that helps\, and finding a publisher. \nShe will leave plenty of time for Q&A. We hope to see you there.

DESCRIPTION:Next Meeting\nJanuary 07\, 2023\n\n9:00am – 9:30am Networking\n9:30am – 11:00am Guest Speaker\n\nSpeaker\nAsh Bishop\n\nTopic\n“Where Have the Bad Guys Gone? Writing Good Antagonists”\n\nThe first novel from Ash Bishop is hard to resist from the mesmerizing cover art to the storyline that immediately gets under your skin. But it’s the ability to create awful yet irresistible antagonists that linger long after you’re finished reading. \nWhile I normally summarize the author’s bio\, I couldn’t say it better than Ash says it himself: “I’m a lifetime reader who loves all genres\, especially science fiction\, mystery\, and fantasy. I have been a high school English teacher\, worked in the video game industry\, and in educational app development. I even used to fetch coffee for Quentin Tarantino during the production of the film Jackie Brown. I currently produce script coverage for a major Hollywood studio\, but I spend my best days at home in Southern California with my wonderful wife and two wonderful children. Many years ago\, I earned an MFA in Creative Writing from San Diego State University.” \nJoin us as we hear from this entertaining storyteller about his professional journey in developing the craft of writing. \nTo learn more about the author\, visit https://ash-bishop.com\n\n\n\n\nVisit our new meeting location at:\n\nAnaheim Packing House\n440 S. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Napa Valley Writers\n March Meeting \nWHEN  —    Wednesday\, March 8\, 7-9 p.m. \nWHERE  — Napa Valley Unitarian Universalists\, 1625 Salvador Ave. Napa \n\nCROTCHES\, CRUCKS\, AND CRUTCHES\n \nNapa Valley Writers will feature A. L. Kucherenko\, the author of Knight’s Pawn\, published in 2022. A.L.’s interest in the Middle Ages began with a personal challenge to learn about something she disliked. Soon\, she discovered a more complicated history than what she had seen from afar. After several years of research and travel along Roman roads and waterways now nearly extinct\, A. L. developed a profound respect for the resilient people who came before her and began writing a fictional account of the era to explore the human story omitted from the sparse lines of medieval documents. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area. \n

SUMMARY:SF Peninsula (Special Event\, In-Person): Finish Your Book in Three Drafts: Crafting Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction with the Book Architecture Method
DESCRIPTION:Finish Your Book in Three Drafts: Crafting Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction with the Book Architecture Method\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s the age-old battle between the outliners and the pantsers – those who meticulously script every writing session\, and those who pilot solely by feel. Finding your unique approach requires a method rather than a formula. Stuart Horwitz’ Book Architecture Method has helped bestselling writers transform their messy manuscripts into polished books. Accomplished and aspiring writers alike will learn the secrets of how to painlessly create a complex narrative such as: \n\n\nwhat “plotting” actually means\, and why there isn’t one narrative arc but several \n\n\nhow to make sure your book has one “theme” – and one theme only \n\n\nhow to separate your work into scenes and use this disassembly to diagnose what’s going wrong with your manuscript\, and \n\n\nthe secret to why some narratives feel like they are all coming together at an emotional pay-off while others do not. \n\n\nThis workshop will introduce writers to a process for organization and revision that includes in-depth exercises to be completed throughout the day so that attendees leave with a new perspective on their book’s core\, its structure\, and where the work of revision lies most clearly. The workshop assumes nothing of a writer’s previous knowledge of technique\, nor how much of their manuscript is complete. \nStuart Horwitz is an acclaimed teacher\, ghostwriter\, independent editor\, and founder of Book Architecture. Stu’s clients have reached the best-seller list in both fiction and non-fiction\, and have appeared on Oprah!\, The Today Show\, and in the most prestigious journals in their fields. He is the author of three acclaimed books on writing: Blueprint Your Bestseller: Organize and Revise Any Manuscript with the Book Architecture Method (Penguin/Perigee)\, which was named one of the year’s best books about writing by The Writer magazine; Book Architecture: How to Plot and Outline Without Using a Formula\, an Amazon bestseller\, and Finish Your Book in Three Drafts: How to Write a Book\, Revise a Book\, and Complete a Book While You Still Love It. Horwitz holds degrees in literary aesthetics from New York University and East Asian studies from Harvard University. He is also an award-winning poet and essayist. He recently relocated to California with his family from New England\, something he should have done years ago.

SUMMARY:South Bay (In-Person): Subplots\, Complications\, and Secondary Characters
DESCRIPTION:March 11th at 10AM: “Subplots\, Complications\, and Secondary Characters” with Martha Conway\nFeb 23\, 2023 | Speaker\, Writing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen your characters stop talking to you and start talking to each other\, your writing is going well. When a subplot neatly links back into the main narrative in a way you couldn’t anticipate\, your writing is under the masterful control of the muse. And when a secondary character unexpectedly jostles to the forefront of the proceedings\, subverting your carefully crafted outline\, your writing is white-hot. Don’t resist these divergent impulses. Instead\, ride the flow as long as you can. During our March 11 meeting\, Martha Conway will teach us how to seamlessly blend rigor and spontaneity to get the most out of subplots\, complications\, and secondary characters.\n  \nAbout: \nMartha Conway is the author of several novels including The Underground River\, which was a New York Times Book Editor’s Choice (entitled The Floating Theatre in the U.K.). Her novel Thieving Forest won the North American Book Award for Best Historical Fiction. Martha’s short fiction has appeared in the Iowa Review\, Mississippi Review\, The Quarterly\, Carolina Quarterly\, and other publications. She has reviewed fiction for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Iowa Review\, and is a recipient of a California Arts Council fellowship in Creative Writing. \nMartha is an instructor of creative writing at Stanford University’s Continuing Studies Program.
