SUMMARY:Inland Empire (In-Person): Life After Sending a Submission
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 24\, 2022\nLife After Sending a Submission …\nThis year\, a handful of Inland Empire members sent manuscripts to The Literary Review\, our state-wide club magazine. They waited over six months for a panel of judges to evaluate their work. As usual\, less than 50% of overall submissions were accepted. Every year\, the editors ask that we follow submission guidelines and hone our writing skills to generate more compelling stories. \nYou be the judge! Join us for an open critique of member submissions. \nDuring our September meeting\, we will share a few of these submissions. In addition\, the club will send you homework… Your assignment is to review\, score and rank the submissions based on the checklist the judges used. Please write a few critique notes. Then\, we will compare our thoughts to the actual results. As far as we know\, only one club member had their story published. Is it the one you would have chosen? Why\, or why not? Did you locate areas where the other submissions did not nail the criteria? \nWe think there are about five manuscripts. Even if you have the time to evaluate only one submission\, the exercise will help you grow as a storyteller\, editor\, and as a judge. Your participation will help everyone become better writers. You will discover why submissions\, rejection\, and re-submission are part of every writer’s life. \nThis critique session will be in-person September 24th\, at the Ovitt location\, also streamed via zoom. The manuscripts and the judging rubric will be sent to members a few weeks in advance. See you then! \n

SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): Switching Gears to Find a New Groove
DESCRIPTION:China Lake Native Talks About Switching Gears to Find a New Groove on Thursday\, October 6 \nAuthor Iris Hattersley\, one of the “Lucky 13\,” will discuss “Switching Gears to Find a New Groove” at the Ridge Writers general meeting on Thursday\, October 6\, that starts at 6:30 pm at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Public welcome. No admission charge. Masks requested. \nHattersley explains that\, “Growing up [maiden name Patricia Reid] at China Lake was one of the best things that happened to me. It was a home like no other place. Did it prepare me for the adventures I experienced later in life? Maybe not\, but it was the safe environment of my youth\, schools with smart teachers and smart kids\, and the place where I developed strong and lasting friendships. \n“My memoir\, ‘Lucky Thirteen\,’ relates my life in this place and my life after I left. Of most interest has been my career in the U.S. Marshals Service at a time when the first thirteen women were hired to carry the badge and credentials of a Deputy U.S. Marshal. I was assigned to Los Angeles\, Honolulu\, and Washington\, D.C. I then worked as a Special Agent for the Department of Defense until my retirement in 1993 in Las Vegas. Years later\, in 2017 with so many accomplishments already behind her as part of her advanced degree\, Iris took courses at Oxford University. \n“I married another deputy\, Larry Hattersley\,” she adds. “We juggled our jobs\, work-related separations\, children\, and home life. Amazingly\, our marriage survived\, and our children are doing well. It has been quite a ride! \n A book signing will follow the program. We hope to see you there.

We may not always have the editing skills we need when called upon in this capacity\, however. This session will help you develop fifteen skillsets which you can then apply to your work as well. \nA general introduction will cover adopting a mindset of neutrality\, how editing is a conversation\, and knowing how to respond based on what draft a writer is in\, followed by a set of specific tools such as working with genre conventions\, narrative arcs and plot holes\, scenic writing\, links and transitions\, tone of voice\, characters and relationships\, point-of-view\, and theme. \n\nStuart Horwitz is a ghostwriter\, independent editor\, and founder of Book Architecture (www.bookarchitecture.com). His clients have reached the best-seller list in both fiction and non-fiction\, and have appeared on Oprah!\, The Today Show\, and in the most prestigious journals in their fields. He is the author of three acclaimed books on writing: Blueprint Your Bestseller: Organize and Revise Any Manuscript with the Book Architecture Method (Penguin/Perigee)\, which was named one of the year’s best books about writing by The Writer magazine; Book Architecture: How to Plot and Outline Without Using a Formula\, which became an Amazon bestseller; and Finish Your Book in Three Drafts: How to Write a Book\, Revise a Book\, and Complete a Book While You Still Love It. \nHorwitz holds degrees in literary aesthetics from New York University and East Asian studies from Harvard University. SUMMARY:East Sierra (In-Person): Beyond the Book: websites\, blogging\, audio versions\, publishing others\, consulting\, and podcasts
DESCRIPTION:JENNIFER CRITTENDEN BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND\nOn the heels of her extremely successful summer program\, Ridge Writers has brought publisher/author Jennifer Crittenden back to Ridge Writers to address a new subject\, this time “Beyond the Book:” websites\, blogging\, audio versions\, publishing others\, consulting\, and podcasts.” She will speak on Thursday evening\, November 3\, 6:30 pm in the meeting room of Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Admission free. Masks requested. \nCrittenden has written three books\, The Discreet Guide for Executive Women; You\, Not I; and The Mammoth Letters. Her company\, Whistling Rabbit Press\, has published four. She maintains three websites devoted to various aspects of her business and writing and publishing. \nA devoted life-long reader\, she says\, “I fooled around a bit with writing in my teens and twenties. After I stopped working full-time\, I returned to writing with a vengeance. I worked in corporate America so I wrote my fair share of emails\, strategic plans\, government and shareholder reports\, and thinly disguised requests for money. Most business writing is awful\, so I tried to do my part to generate clean\, precise prose in a messy world.” \nIn tandem with this goal through Whistling Rabbit\, she plans and produces the Eastern Sierra Book Festival in Mammoth Lakes in July. \nWe hope to see you when she comes to visit Ridgecrest and Ridge Writers.

SUMMARY:Tri-Valley (In-Person): Muse Boards: A Visual Writing Aid for All Genres
DESCRIPTION:Jill Hedgecock\, Author and Freelance Writer\, November 19\, 2022\nAugust 29\, 2022\n\nJill Hedgecock will present “Muse Boards: A Visual Writing Aid for All Genres” at the Tri-Valley Writers November 19\, 2022 meeting. When distilled down to its very essence\, a writer’s job is to immerse their readers in a three-dimensional world through words. Just as fine artists often find it easier to paint what they see\, many writers find that prose can be inspired by viewing images. This need was the inspiration to develop the muse board tool.\nA muse board is a versatile visual aid designed to create mood\, assist in character development\, inform book structure\, and inspire descriptive text. Its versatility means it can be specialized to fit any genre. And one of its most powerful features is assisting writers in keeping details straight. This talk will describe how to make and use a muse board and the many advantages of investing the time to create one.\nIn this craft talk\, Jill will describe:\n• Different Possible Muse Board Formats\n• Various Materials that Can be Used\n• How to Create Your Board\n• Outline Twelve Benefits of This Time-Saving Tool\n• How to Use the Muse Board to Market Your Book \n\nRead More »\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n Consent to be recorded\nBy registering for this meeting\, you acknowledge that the meeting may be recorded. DESCRIPTION:KAREN BLAKE LOOKS AT STEM\, GRAPHIC NOVELS\, AND TRADITIONAL PRINT \nJanuary 5\, 2023 \nAward-winning writer and poet\, and also a STEM game and book publisher\, Karen Blake will give the Ridge Writers January 5\, 2023 program that starts at 6:30 p.m\, at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church\, 633 W. Las Flores. Pubic invited. Admission free. Masks requested. \nHer awareness of the importance of STEM education focuses on encouraging kids to learn about how the world works. This goes beyond science and into the world of business. She accomplishes this through games. She launched STEMdelivered.org and Rhizomes Books\, Inc. in 2011 following her run for Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2010. It was her way of meeting the talent required to form the technical team for her publishing company that released two products in 2014\, “Physics on the River” (a visual novel) and “Matwa Finds a Brother” (a children’s book). The matching game\, Antelope UP\, is available on multiple platforms. \nFor her program\, she will discuss finding outlets for her new projects\, whether there is a STEM market if members want to break into writing for it\, and given her background ranging from graphic novels to traditional print\, she will examine the features they would need to succeed such as strong plots and characters\, as well as what to know about illustrations\, lettering\, any software that helps\, and finding a publisher. \nShe will leave plenty of time for Q&A. We hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Orange Co (In-Person): Where Have the Bad Guys Gone? Writing Good Antagonists
DESCRIPTION:Next Meeting\nJanuary 07\, 2023\n\n9:00am – 9:30am Networking\n9:30am – 11:00am Guest Speaker\n\nSpeaker\nAsh Bishop\n\nTopic\n“Where Have the Bad Guys Gone? Writing Good Antagonists”\n\nThe first novel from Ash Bishop is hard to resist from the mesmerizing cover art to the storyline that immediately gets under your skin. But it’s the ability to create awful yet irresistible antagonists that linger long after you’re finished reading. \nWhile I normally summarize the author’s bio\, I couldn’t say it better than Ash says it himself: “I’m a lifetime reader who loves all genres\, especially science fiction\, mystery\, and fantasy. I have been a high school English teacher\, worked in the video game industry\, and in educational app development. I even used to fetch coffee for Quentin Tarantino during the production of the film Jackie Brown. I currently produce script coverage for a major Hollywood studio\, but I spend my best days at home in Southern California with my wonderful wife and two wonderful children. Many years ago\, I earned an MFA in Creative Writing from San Diego State University.” \nJoin us as we hear from this entertaining storyteller about his professional journey in developing the craft of writing. \nTo learn more about the author\, visit https://ash-bishop.com\n\n\n\n\nVisit our new meeting location at:\n\nAnaheim Packing House\n440 S.
