We’ll talk about defining moments\, personality typing\, and personal experience as tools to build characters from the inside out. \nKerry Schafer (who also writes as Kerry Anne King) was the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Writer of the Year in 2020. She is a best-selling hybrid author with twelve novels in print. She is also a retired RN\, a licensed mental health counselor\, and a certified Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach. His pursuits have included flying airplanes and helicopters\, SCUBA instructor\, ski patrol\, sailing\, and other adventures designed to pry him off his couch. His professional law enforcement career began in the 1970s\, when he served as patrol officer\, sergeant\, watch commander\, and patrol division commander. Jim’s tenure has always emphasized de-escalation techniques or calming the waters during potentially violent encounters. That career was followed by 22 years in security management and consulting\, including 5 years with UCLA’s Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center exploring crime prevention in schools and small retail establishments. Jim’s interests include writing in various forms\, including reports\, poetry\, songs\, short stories\, magazine articles\, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Ten years ago his writing interests shifted to novels. Speaker and topic are below. \n\nFacilitator: M.Diane Smith\, Coastal Dunes CWC Vice-President\nTopic: Writers’ Workshop & Kickoff for Summer Writing Contest \nCoastal Dunes CWC will be having a writing contest the summer of 2022\, with the theme\, “Writing During Tumultuous Times.” Our May monthly meeting will be a writers’ workshop to encourage attendees to enter the contest\, and to enhance their writing skills. The workshop exercise will be to write about the topic\, “What I Learned During Covid – About Myself.” Attendees will have a handout to guide their writing\, and will have the opportunity to share what they’ve written during the session. \nThis workshop will be facilitated by our own M.Diane Smith\, Coastal Dunes CWC Vice-President and Director of Programs. She is an educator and an award-winning writer of short fiction and nonfiction. She has been published by New Times\, LitReactor\,Haunted Waters Press\, Leodegraunce\, GreenPrints\, Tolosa Press\, Modern Serenity\,and more. As a high school teacher (and counselor)\, Diane thoroughly enjoyed teaching and\, while psychology classes were a breeze\, English classes were seen as a challenge which she met with the full force of her background in literature and her weird humor. Diane has been a member of CWC for about five years\, as well as other writing groups for which she has given talks and facilitated critique groups. Speaker and topic are below. \n\nSpeaker: Viviana Hall\nTopic: Poems of Love \nApril is National Poetry Month\, reminding us that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters in our lives. \nOur speaker will be our very own Viviana Hall\, who will do her presentation and a poetry reading from her recently published book\, Poems of Love\, which has received acclaim. Pacific Book Review’s Alyssa Avina had this to say\, “In author Viviana Hall’s Poems of Love\, the poet translates the language of love through a bilingual poetry book. A native of Argentina\, the writer translates her poetry from Spanish into English\, conveying love in the form of compassion\, a joy for the love that life brings us\, and the transformative nature of love as a whole.” \nViviana Hall is an American writer\, journalist\, and clinical social worker. Her first book “Miedos” was published in her native Buenos Aires in 1977. Thereafter\, she came to New York as a press correspondent\, wherein 1982 a new edition of “Miedos” and her second book “Poemas del Cielo y la Tierra” were published. \nAs a journalist\, she produced\, wrote\, and hosted various television documentaries\, variety\, and public service programs in New York. Her media work earned her numerous distinguished awards. Before starting to write fiction at age 74\, he published over 100 professional and academic articles.\nThere are many obstacles to becoming a mystery writer at age 74. Ron’s “strategy” was to ignore them. The result so far has been 12 stories about a baby boomer detective couple—the sleuthing silvers—at the website www.thesleuthingsilvers.com. They have over 3400 followers on Facebook and have attracted the interest of two young screenwriters\, who are writing a pilot to be submitted to streaming services. Ron has been interviewed on NBC radio\, has been featured in the local press and has been a judge for the Shamus Award—given by the Private Eye Writers of America—for the best short story.
