DESCRIPTION:June 3rd\n\n\nRoss Berger\n\n\nWriting for Video Games and New Technologies\n\n\n\nRoss Berger\nPicture courtesy of Yfat Yossifor\n\n\n\nThe San Fernando Valley Branch of the California Writers Club is pleased to welcome author and screenwriter Ross Berger as the keynote speaker on Saturday\, June 3rd at 1:00 pm for our first HYBRID meeting (in-person and Zoom)\, with a presentation titled “Writing for Video Games and New Technologies.” \n\n\nThese days there are many writing revenue streams but how do you find your way into a market that you know little or nothing about? Next month\, expert Ross Berger will be with us to discuss just how to get started in some of these new and exciting platforms. \n\n\nVideo games are a massive industry that offer countless ways to have fun. Creating the stories for video games\, however\, is no small task. It requires some common denominators from other media (like TV and film)\, but there are other skills — and other ways of looking at story — that are native to the industry itself. This talk will dive into the basics of writing for games and show how this medium differs from others and why it is a force to be reckoned with. \n\n\nRoss Berger is a writer\, narrative designer\, and adjunct professor based in Los Angeles. He is the author of Dramatic Storytelling & Narrative Design: A Writer’s Guide to Video Games & Transmedia (CRC Press\, 2020)\, a “how to” for fledgling game writers and screenwriters\, and is the editor/contributor of Storytelling for New Technologies & Platforms: A Writer’s Guide to Theme Parks\, Virtual Reality\, Board Games\, Virtual Assistants\, and More (CRC Press\, 2022). \nHis screenwriting credits include: Law & Order and the Webby-Award winning LonelyGirl15. He also served as the supervising producer for the social media/television gaming experience The Runner. Ross has also worked extensively in virtual reality as a writer for the Oculus Rift launch title Farlands and the award-winning thriller Eclipse: Edge of Light for the Google Daydream\, Oculus Go\, and Nintendo Switch. As a senior/lead narrative designer in the video game industry\, he has written AAA games for EA Sports (NBA Live franchise) and XBox\, where he served as the co-showrunner for an interactive TV/video game prototype that set the foundation for Quantum Break. \nRoss is also the author of short stories including “Football with Leatherman” (2020) and “Evie A.I.” (2021)\, both published by TulipTree Publishing. A graduate of Brandeis (BA\, Philosophy) and Columbia (MFA\, Playwriting) universities\, Ross is a member of the Writers Guild of America and the Television Academy and is currently an adjunct assistant professor at University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts\, where he teaches a course on game writing. \n\n\nThis lecture promises to be fun and informative\, looking at story writing in a new way\, plus refreshments will be served! With the fastest-growing signup in history\, ChatGPT is putting this tool into the hands of millions. Few professions will be more impacted than writers. \nMany who are already embracing ChatGPT are in the business of content creation: writers\, ghostwriters\, copywriters\, technical writers\, illustrators\, narrators\, translators\, marketers\, and editors. \nAI is allowing freelance writers to cut their research time in half. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 19\, 2022\nAt the Heart of Screenplay: Character / Conflict\nToney Merritt\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA comprehensive overview of the development practices of turning ideas into screenplays/scripts for film and/or video productions. The screenplay is a comprehensive set of instructions written in a specific format that addresses all of the crafts related to producing a movie; casting\, cinematography\, costume and set and sound design\, direction and editing to list a few. Along with story development\, a screenplay has two goals: Economy and Clarity. Economy in writing as few words as possible avoiding overly descriptive language. Clarity\, so that everyone working on the film knows exactly what is required from their craft. \nToney Merritt\, (MFA 1979) has been an Interdisciplinary Artist and Independent filmmaker for over 50 years\, having completed over 30 personal films and videos; experimental\, narrative and documentary. His films have screened a various venues such as the Paris Cinematheque\, The London Coop\, Pacific Film Archives\, the San Francisco Cinematheque\, Ann Arbor and Mill Valley Film Festivals\, Anthology Film Archives\, New York and the Oakland and DeYoung Museums\, and recently\, with a one-person retrospective at Lightbox Cinema in Philadelphia in 2021. Toney was the Program Director for the Mendocino Film Festival for 2 years\, 2014 and 2015. He taught Film Production and Digital Editing at City College San Francisco\, and Screenwriting for the San Francisco State University’s Digital Video Intensive Program. He was invited to present as a writer/director at the 2007\, what was known as\, Squaw Valley Community of Writer’s Conference\, and invited back in 2008 to serve as a screenwriting mentor to 4 aspiring screenwriters. Speakers and topic are below.  \n \nSpeakers: Sara Roahen\nTopic: Writing the Tough Stuff: techniques and tips for those times when your own storytelling gets you down. \nSara Roahen writes\, edits\, coaches\, teaches\, and otherwise dabbles in storytelling—for fun and for hire. \nHer memoir\, Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table\, was the chosen reading for the One Book One New Orleans reading initiative in 2009\, and it received the Louisiana Library Association’s Louisiana Literary Award in 2010. Sara co-edited and contributed writing to The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook. Her work has additionally appeared in Saveur\, Bon Appetit\, Tin House\, Oxford American\, and Garden & Gun magazines\, and in/on a host of other magazines\, newspapers\, books\, and websites. \nSara honed her listening\, documenting\, backroad-driving\, and boudin-ball-eating skills while conducting extensive fieldwork for the Southern Foodways Alliance’s extraordinary oral history initiative. \nShe holds a copyediting certificate from UCSD and currently teaches life-story writing in San Luis Obispo\, California\, through Cuesta College’s Emeritus program. In this presentation\, we’ll dive into how to bring your characters to life naturally and organically\, rather than artificially stitching them together and trying to force them to do what you want. We’ll talk about defining moments\, personality typing\, and personal experience as tools to build characters from the inside out. \nKerry Schafer (who also writes as Kerry Anne King) was the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Writer of the Year in 2020. She is a best-selling hybrid author with twelve novels in print. She is also a retired RN\, a licensed mental health counselor\, and a certified Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach. Applying their decades of experience—Audrey as a novelist and birth doula\, Jennifer as a college professor and memoirist—they have developed the popular Birth Your Truest Story workshop series\, which helps writers hone their craft as they build community and commit to their writing practice. Her writer’s guide\, The Elemental Journey of Purposeful Memoir\, won a 2017 Nautilus Silver Award. Her latest book\, winner of the 2022 Gold Nautilus Award\, is Purposeful Memoir as a Quest for a Thriving Future. Jennifer provides coaching and manuscript review for authors in fiction and nonfiction\, and offers writing workshops online and in person. \nAudrey Kalman writes fiction with a dark edge about what goes awry when human connection is missing from our lives. She is the author of three novels—The Last Storyteller\, What Remains Unsaid\, Dance of Souls\, and Tiny Shoes Dancing\, a short fiction collection shortlisted for the 2019 International Rubery Book Award. She holds a B.A. in creative writing from Simon’s Rock College of Bard and an M.A. in magazine journalism from Syracuse University. Speaker and topic are below. \n \nSpeaker: Andrew Luria\nTopic: For the Love of the Game: A 14-Year Journey from Idea to Debut Novel \nAndrew Luria is a ten-time Emmy Award winner and has more than twenty years of experience as a news\, sports\, technology\, and entertainment anchor and reporter.  He is currently with FOX 5 San Diego.  Andrew played baseball and football at Cornell University and semi-pro baseball for the Santa Barbara Foresters as well.  Andrew coaches his three kids in baseball\, basketball\, and football.  He also teaches an award-winning elementary school broadcasting class.  He recently published his first book:  a historical fiction time-traveling sports story for kids\, called The Adventures of Charlie Marley. \nAndrew will be in person speaking on the long road it took to go from the beginning of the book project to the final product\, and the current effort to follow it up with another (in less time\, hopefully!).  He will address how balancing life and career and navigating the book world has been quite the journey\, and he is looking forward to sharing his experiences with everyone. \nOur in-person monthly meetings are admission free and held at the:\nNipomo Library\, Community Room\, 918 West Tefft Street\, Nipomo\, CA\nDirections: From 101 northbound or southbound\, take the Tefft street exit.\nProceed west for .9 mile.
